I am 22, 23 in May, and i want a Scooby for my next car( i currently have a modded Escort GTi) I have had a quote of £1000 fully comp on a UK turbo off Direct Line for when i am 23, although i need to fit a tracker.
Should i stick with the UK scooby turbo, or pay more for an imported WRX?
What is the real difference between them?
Are they trustworthy? ( just i keep thinking, if its a good one, why is it not still in Japan?!?!)
Are the " Full service histories" genuine?
Is the mileage genuine?
Just I feel that a lot of the WRX imports round where i live seem to good to be true, I saw a 98 R plate in black, 28000 miles, 17's for £5500 last week, and i walked away becuse it was smoking.

Part of the reason for masses of imports are that the Japanese equivalent of the MOT makes owning a car in Japan which is more then three years old VERY VERY expensive (making a massive assumption that most imports come from Japan !!). Also the Japanese always want the latest and greatest of anything - they frequently buy new versions of products within a few months of the original purchase - it seems to be part of their culture. Finally car prices are very low in Japan, probably 25% less than UK for similar spec car - nice profits for importers.

that price is too cheap hence the smoking thing i guess
Anyway sounds like a very healthy quote on the insurance front. I started with direct line on a standard UK turbo at the age of 24 & i did intend 2 stay standard but following a few meets i got the bug & stuck a few mods on & i wood say that they arent the most MOD friendly insurance company, im now with liverpool victoria who r (although im a bit older now only 1+ year) very mod friendly. U may find it more difficult & a hell of a lot more expensive on the import thing thou! I'm looking 2 upgrade 2 an STi type R but cant get cover on import on my current policy so am guna wait till next insuarnce year which will be quite a bit more vast i imagine
Anyway so yes imports r better spec & slightly more power but get sum quotes b4 u even consider it as the UK scoob is a fantastic piece of metal & the rex aint a vast amount better so u really wana weight up pros & cons of the different options I kudnt of afforded cover on import at the time & the UK scoob is all i ever wanted (erm ok so i am now lying & gettin greedy lookin @ STi ) da choice is yers

Also mate, the insurance on a Jap import is ALOT different then a UK car, i'd make sure you get a rock solid quote for a jap import before you buy one.
Cheers and Good luck
BTW I found Tesco's really good for my UK Scooby (22 with 3 yrs NCD, and a none fault accident)

They are about, but if your looking at a N/P 95/96/97 they are gonna have have a good 80k on them.
These cars go on for lots of miles IF serviced properly, you out for either full Subaru SH or a specialist company SH.
Good Luck
Cheers

Have just spoken to a guy at Bramhall Cars in Cheshire, he says that when i am ready he can get me anything i want for the right money from his importer in Japan, had a go in a 93 wrx with an adjustable spoiler etc etc, "fully loaded". And i have never had so much fun in a car EVER. And that was £5500

Dan, you'll get insured... It'll cost you though. Worst I've heard is 15k for a 17 year old on a new STI...
Chris, find an extra couple of grand and you might be able to have my MY00 in June

I'll be 21 in September, with 3yrs NCB in August. I feel victimised for being young, don't see why it should just be old timers who get to enjoy decent cars!
Probably worth waiting? Gotta get rid of my ***** Saxo first anyway.

Dan - it doesn't change much as you get older im afraid.
I'm 29, 6 years NCB, no points or claims, and a Scoob is still around the £800 mark to insure.
My current MR2 is £650 fully comp. When that is sold, my new 205 XS will be £230
Edited cos I am 29, not 28

I'm paying silly insurance at the moment on my Saxo cos its quite heavily modified. I don't mind paying out a lot for insurance on a Scoob (within reason, sub £2k?!) but whats all this business about servicing it every 6 months!? I'm seriously doubting weather I'm gonna be able to afford to run one. Are they really that high maintenance?

Yes! service every 6 month costing from £100 to £700 worst case (as is my 90k service coming in a few months) petrol u wont get much over 20mpg if yer lucky, insurance mods & paying sum1 2 slap u 2 take silly grin off face.
It sure aint cheap 2 run i didnt appreciate just how much it was to run when i 1st had enough money to buy one but can honestly say i dont regret it! But it is worth taking into account

I'm am currently in silly debt with my Saxo, gonna try and clear it when I sell it and whatever car I get next is gonna land me in some fresh debt!
I'm not sure if it's gonna be a wise move buying a Scoob now, I'm worried I'm not gonna be able to afford to maintain it and I'll end up killing it!
