hi, i have a jap sti version 2 my96 and am very happy with it so far. i have noticed one thing tho, it only revs to 7500rpm! i thought that it would go to 8250rpm? was this only for the later sti's anyone? also most places i have read that this model had 275ps as standard but a few places say 260ps...? anyone...?
the dealer said 275, but he probably would anyway........

cheers sinky, loads if good info. not too clear about the rev limit tho, but says all 'later' sti's rev to over 8000rpm. maybe the version 1 and 2 only went to 7500rpm? anyone with a version 2 confirm this?
cheers, dodge.................

Hi chaps. I've had my V2 for over 3 years.
7500rpm? To be honest I didn't even think the early engine would go that high. I thought that no matter what state of tune, the limit was 7000 end of story. The rev limit is 7000 on my car.
Also, the V2 is 275ps or 260bhp as standard. The 280bhp models didn't start until the V3 as far as I know.
Cheers

don't want to sound as if i know it all but the 275ps figure is actually closer to 271 bhp. (1 bhp = 1.0139 ps IIRC)

cheers

I also have a sti2 that hits the limiter at 7000rpm.
I recomend HKS super dragger and HKS super power flow induction kit to boost that BHP a little more. It sounds great aswell but the neighbours are not as keen.

I must ask...
Why the hell do you wanna rev your car that high??
Power would IMHO be dropping off before then..

I agree with you tweenierob. But everyones different. My peak power is at 6400rpm and it rarely gets that high living in London.

Your probably right Bigsinky but depending where you look, it seems to be stated as 275ps or 260bhp.

The first time I had the car dyno'd I got 263bhp (result here http://dyno.scoobynet.co.uk/jap/alex_creasey.htm ) with an air filter + Milltek exhaust which actually seemed/felt quite restrictive as HKS Hiper I put on after made a massive improvement in the way the car felt + breathed.

Cheers

I've got an STI 1 and the revs are redlined on the counter at 7000 onwards. I dont know whether it is safe to go beyond that regularly, the scooby bottom is supposed to be able to stand a lot of abuse, no one has been able to say to my knowledge.

Someone quite rightly said there is no point in using much beyond 6250-6500 since the power curve is dropping by then anyway and you will only achieve a reduction in acceleration in return for excessive inertial loads on the engine. This could eventually cost you a lot of money. This gear ratios are such that if you change up at about 6000 rpm or so the car will pull like a train in the next higher gear.

Enjoy the car-top machine I say.

I have an STI RA type 1 which redlines at 7500rpm!! There is a lot of talk about STI's having 8250 redlines due to the stronger internels etc!

It does seem to me that 7500 is the maximum in the earlier model STI's!!

Wish it would rev to more as I'm always hitting the Rev limiter with the close ratio box in my RA!

Not sure about v2, but I have a v4 sti and wondered about the red line limit, so I had a little test yesterday afternoon, and I quite comfortably hit the 8k mark before deciding to change up. The only trouble is, as you will know, doing this in 3rd gear will mean you are v. close to 100mph.
I was however on a private road, obviously.......

Thumbs up

yeh joff, i was on a private road too........
thanx for all the info folks. i dont make a habit of red line-ing the car btw, i've just been curious too see exactly where it kicks in and that i had bought a genuine sti. i totally agree that 6000-6500rpm is enough.
anyway i'm certain now............
thanx again, dodge

Dodge,

I had the same fears as whether or not I had a genuine STI but the chasis no. checks out.
But someone has painted the inlet manifold red. So 1 of 2 things..
1) Its been painted from silver or 2) Its been touched up?

So a bit of investigation followed.

Apparently the red is prone to peeling and may require touching in if appearances are important, obviously thay are.
In addition I had the turbo spec checked out and that confirmed it definately was an STI turbo and of course the final test the RED LINE test.

So now, like yourself, I am satisfied the engine is an STI for sure!!

Happy driving.

the crackle finish does start flaking as I've noticed on several older cars, including my own. So decided to repaint it last autumn. Did have doubts as to wether this sort of thing would crop up when selling but it will check out on the VIN etc.
Besides, I would rather it look a different colour + neat than flaking off all over the place + look awful! Not important to some but it is to me.
Cheers .

It may be only R/RA type's of the STi V2 that have 7500 redlines as my Type RA STi2 definatly will go to 7500, but as said before you might as well change before 7000 to keep the car in its best powerband.
