Importing this year ????.....SVA checks

Found this on the BIMTA site.
"Tougher import test
Grey imports Cost of buying set to soar when new vehicle test begins in August
THE COST of grey imports is set to soar this year as tougher test are launched for cars entering the UK from outside Europe.
Anyone buying a non-EU car will have to put it through a more difficult version of the current Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test.
The new rules come into force on 1 August, and importers warn the average cost of a test will rocket from £250 to up to £1500 per car.
"This extra cost will inevitably be passed on to the consumer," says Richard Moore of the importers' group the British Independent Motor Trade Association.
"We are extremely disappointed. This is bad news for consumers: it adds another layer of red tape, making it more expensive and difficult to bring in cheaper, more interesting niche cars."
Moore predicts higher SVA costs will reduce the number of grey imports entering the UK from 25,000 in 2000 to 20,000 this year.
The tougher SVA will bring new tests on steering, emissions, security, seatbelts, brakes and noise.
CAP Grey Book editor Robert Hester says tougher SVA tests will help make grey imports more accepted by British buyers."

will help make grey imports become more accepted by the brisish buyers
I think that the british buyer has become more accepting of grey imports since they found out that british prices are artifically high. IMO its the insurance companies that don't really accept imports...

Is this August this year or August just gone?
£1500? where did they get that from?! Its £500 to import a car before 1997 but after 97 (and including 97) its £1000. So £1000 + £250 is £1250 so where did the extra £250 come from??

I think its £150 for the basic SVA but then you need other bits. You need to add a rear foglight, fuel neck and change kmh to mph. I think this is where it added up to £500.
I think mine was £550 so it must have included, SVA, fog light, speedo and delimiter, fuel neck and tax for 6 months.
I know after 97 its a pain in the ****. I was talking to a mate about this and he said there is more testing thats done and it just sounds like a right pain if you dont know what you are doing.

Yea sorry m8 got it. I was thinking 300-400 for the conversion bits. so would appear right.
The actual statement was just for the SVA test on its own i think.
Yea just checked, its the cost of the TEST.barstewards.

Decided to go the import route from japan on my own, better spec, and half the mileage of what the import dealers in uk will sell for the price.
