Looking to purchase an imported WRX, being new to importing and the pitfuls i am somewhat concerned that 6 months down the line the nice guys from Customs come a take me car away due to it being nicked in Japan 2 years ago or some thing.

Have contacted DVLA and police etc who offer next to no advice at all, as far as I can tell a BIMTA cert is really what you want but most dont seem have one. What is the best advice anyone can offer on the whole subject ???

Also does 7K sound a fair price for a 94 Jap import WRX 39K as this this is what we are looking at. Seems about right to me but Im no expert.

Also what are people paying for insurance. we are looking at 1400 a year with 5 years no claims from Tesco (one of very few that will insure an under 25 on a WRX). Policy in the better halfs name as she has the 5 years NC but is 23, Im 25.

Sorry this is a bit of a mind dump but could do with some sound advice on the whole subject if possible, cant afford to get dicked on this. I think the insurance is best we will get @ <25 for the Mrs age and 7K seems a fair price for the car, I am looking to run out and do this tomorrow but am dubious about the concerns of importing and want to be dam sure before parting with near to 10K on it.

I'll stop ranting now, thanks for any replies

abt 6k should be fair for a 94. 7k is too high, lots of 93-95 wrxs out there.

too expensive on both counts.

a 94 WRX should cost you around the £5K mark for a good one.
My mate runs his own buisness http://www.aisimports.co.uk and he regulary imports this age for around this price and puts a 12 month waranty on them.

As for the stolen issue, its not a problem anymore if you buy from a respecatable company. Everything is check in Japan before they leave. All the good companys will do eveything above board which should avoid any come backs.

As for insurance. My quote is £1800 for a year 2000 STI-6 TypeR Limited.
I am 23 years old with 4 years NCB. This is with Tesco.

SULS, saw the car your after on the site, the one with the BIMTA
certificate ??
Check where the cert came from, just been onto the BIMTA site,
unless the registered BIMTA dealers is out of date; your dealer isnt listed among them.

Stolen imports: If you haven't got the BIMTA thing, then get the seller to agree (in writing) that they are respnsible for the car if it later turns out to be stolen.

Insurance: Have you tried Greenlight, Adrian Flux, Liverpool Victoria (supposed to be the cheapest for imports). Tescos are good for UK cars but not as good for imports. Although, £1400 would suit me fine.

Price: I agree, 7K is way too much. It is a buyers market out there. Be patient, look around, haggle, there are some deperate sellers out there who will take about 5K for a 93-94 WRX. If you have 7-10K to spend then you could find something very special, if you have the time...

Just got off the phone to BIMTA, the cert will stay with the car for the cars life so the seller doesnt have to be registered although a little curious.

Having real trouble finding any thing at a similar milage and year for less pennys, using autotrader search can find a fair few of same age for less but are all between 60 and 100 K, am I looking in the wrong places ???

Insurance wise Greenlight is the only one we havent tried yet, worth a rip.

Thanks for all the comments , keep them coming SULS

Remember with the milage....: you need to find the first MOT, and take the milage of that, because that is in Km's. then add miles from there. I just sold a 93WRX, it was showing 96K on the clock, but because it was only imports 2 years ago, this was 67,000 miles....

Edited to say, most people on the trader don't know that, and advertise the car as the clock shows..

Yeah Michaels car is well nice! I was going to buy it and was gutted to see he dropped his price down. The car is mint! Year 95 and its lower mileage than your 94! And its got quite a few mods on it. If you werent interested in the mods, they will get sold in 2 secs and you will have a well nice motor for less what you are paying now!!!

Also check with tesco, you usually need a tracker on it. I recommend Dr Clifford in the security forum. He done my security at a very cheap price that met insurance approval and i know it is safe!

Yes Mikes car is a dream, the mods although very nice just put the insurance quote that we managed to get down to 1200 up to over 2 grand, bit unfortunate to say the least.

Still considering tho,

Just sell the mods. You could buy his car and sell the mods yourself. Or get him to take some of the mods off and give him less money.

I know he/you will sell the mods very quickly! I know someone interested - ME

Not sure, he mad do. i cant remember the spec of his car. I remember emailing him loads but all my emails are at work!

Did he email you the spec?

If he hasnt got the original parts, im sure you could sell the modified parts for the original + a bit of cash. People will be happy with that as when they upgrade their mods, they have no need for standard parts! I have loads of standard parts laying outside in the shed that are near enough new!!

Some thing like this on top of the original spec

Double Din head unit (CD/Radio/Tape) with remote control
Large Alpine rear speakers (light up neon blue with car lights, shine's
alpine onto back window)
GReaddy Billet Aluminium Gear ****
Speedo converted to MPH
Veilside front bumper splitter
16" White Advan RC race wheels (5 spoke)
Grooved, vented, x-drilled front brake discs (done 500 miles)
New rear brake discs (done 500 miles)
New green stuff pads all around (done 500 miles)
4 new tyres (done 500 miles)
STI V rear spoiler (with brake light)
22B Bonnet vents
HKS Sequential Dump Valve (cylinder shape with purple release valve)
HKS Super Power Flow Induction Kit (Green mushroom shape)
NGK Spark Plugs
HKS Widened Down pipe (off the turbocharger)
HKS Hiper Exhaust System (Down pipe Backwards, 5" Bore) (Very loud, flame
burst on gear change when hot)
4 Brand new Coils
HKS Turbo Timer
STI Carbon Fiber Front Strut Brace

Other problem for me is that Mike lives in IOM hence the car has no MOT, could get around that one tho

I can sell those in a second for you mate and get original standard parts!

I dont know why im trying to sell you Mikes scooby, lol! He is a top guy though and i loved his pics of his car.

You will need an MOT which isnt a problem but you will also need to get it registered in the dvla as he has a different plate. Not 100% sure but i think so

Yeah, I was gonna make him an offer this weekend, until the insurance quote put a stop to that

Could still be possible maybe we can work something out, bloody difficult tho,

1 - I have no transport (old car was written off) somerset > IOM long way
2 - I can't insure the car without MOT (how to get the car here)
3 - I cant insure with all those mods (how to get the car here)
4 - manx tax \ insurnace (again how to get the car here)

Sod it might as well get a sodding SMART car and then go hang myself.

I'm gonna try and talk to Mike over the weekend, see if we can work any thing out.

You will be fine mate! It can happen. Speak to Mike over the weekend. If all goes well, insure the car as basic. Then go and pick it up and drive it back and get the MOT sorted when you get back. I thought with insurance, you have about a week to get taxed and MOT. The insurance dont need to know if the car is MOT'd or not.

Now getting there, could be easy as training it up there, getting a boat over and getting Mike to meet you on the other side.

It can happen

Try Privilege.co.uk, I was insured with them when I had a 93WRX, around £1000 but this includes protected no claims - which was really handy being as I rolled it and wrote it off !

They gave a me a very good figure for it too (£6.7K not including £380 for stereo).

Only thing is they ask for a Tracker which is a must in their eyes.

Hopefully pickig up a 95WRX in weeks time so will go back to them..

Hope this helps

Cheers
