Floppy wing mirror on MY02 - help please

The drivers side wing mirror is floppy; it swivels on its hinge but is not attached to the main body of the door. There appears to be a double sided sticky pad that used to hold it still against the door. I am not aware of anyone hitting it - there certainly isn't any other damage. Over about 20mph it just swings in the wind.
Is it realy held in place by a sticky pad ? or is it something more serious ?
