gonna change my UK MY98 scoob for a jap-spec motor, but can't decide on a Sti or STi type R??
I am after muchos fun, and have always liked the look of the 2 door coupe scooby's - but looking on aut trader 1997 Type R's go for similar money to a 1999-2000 Sti!!!
What would people recommend I go for???

Have you driven either of the cars in question? If you havent then get in both and take them out for a spin, make sure its wet as well, then youll see how much fun u can have in the type r. Up to you at the end of the day.

Unforunately there is no-one that I know around this way, and I don't want to waste peoples time by going "just" for a test drive.
I am looking at around the 13-14k mark, and also wondered if there was much difference between the 1998 (v3???) type R's and the v5's onwards???
I assume that the 1998 (r reg) car's have the facelifted dash etc?

14k will get you a sti5typer. Its advisable to drive the cars before buying them, after all you wont be wasting anyones time when u like what u have driven and give them the cash, also try dealers.

I'll have to llok harder then (i can only seem to find 1998 cars for 13-14k!!!)
Does any one know of any dealers that hold STi's as I would rather trade in my UK MY98 than have to wait to sell it privately (and after watching wrong car right car - fancy my chances at a decent deal!!!)

Paul;

Ta for the mail - others, ta for the links!

Does the adjustable diff affect the handling that much???

Basically, what I want to know is, is the Type R more of a "Drivers" car than the STi, and also, is there realistically any major performcance differences (i know that the typeR has shorter gearing, but in the real world, is there that much difference)??

Maybe someone with a Type R is better suited to comment than me.

the power splits for the type r with the dif totally free (normal driving mode) will be 64%rear 36% front this makes the car very much like a rear wheel drive car. By progressively locking the diff, which can be done in several stages by thumbing a round 'button' you can change the characteristics to that of more a normal impreza, this can be done when the car is moving as well as stationary. But locking the diff more you will notice 'jerkiness' at tight corners roundabouts and at low speeds.

On a wet road or at high speeds the car will not behave the same as yours does now. If its fun factor you are after then go fo it. On a pratical level if you are going to use the car everyday, and especially on motorways maybe the 4 door is the better option, as the gearing ih higher and you wont see circa 180 miles out of a tank which i got in my typer.

There are a few obvious differences between the 2 models like, price, 2 and 4 doors, water spray on the type r, diff control typer, pimp tints in the type r, perhaps many more im not totally up on the other differences.

From a personal point i sold my typer after six months because it didnt suit my purpose.

Other half had type R (V4) for a year and 14k miles whilst I'v had a 5 door UK turbo for 5 years. The adjustable diff makes the car behave much more like a RWD car.

It was a hugely competent car but for the first few months it was quite intimidating. Wheras the standard UK Turbo is hugely forgiving of average driving the Type R demands more concentration. Once you get some confidence though it's reserves were huge. I seem to recall though some threads a few years back where a couple of folk lost it with their Type R's shortly after swapping over from standard Turbos - including IIRC one chap who lost it the day after he had picked it up - how gutting!

It was a real shame that we needed a load lugger to go with the Elise that replaced the Type R - what a great combination.

Now I have never driven a standard STI (though I'm looking for a 5 door at the right price to replace my ageing UK 5 door) - should go well with the 220bhp Elise the Mrs has just bought

Type R/RA are probably one of the best impreza you can buy.

If your after 2 doors then go for a type R, if 4 doors then go for Type RA.

Both have an adjustable diff, no ABS, water spray intercooler andShort gear ratio (some RA's have even shorter ratios then the type R). All together they are a true drivers car as they have a 35\65 diff split unlike uk and normal STI's which are 50\50 split.

Perfomance wise they will probably leave most other impreza's for dead 0-60 times are in the reigon of 4.3s -4.5s depending on which ratios are fitted.

But one thing you must remember is that these cars are imports and demand to have at least 98ron petrol as an absolute minimum.
This means using SUL or Optimax with Octane Boosters to raise the level of the petrol to somewhere near the 100ron petrol that they were mapped for in Japan.

If you need anymore info the have a look here or SIDC faq .

I've got a V5 Type R V-Ltd. V-Ltd means it's got the roof vent and sonic blue paint. Went from a 94 WRX to it and have to say it's soooo fast. Added Link ECU to boost power to 330hp and 4 door STI 5th gear for better cruising.

Car is wonderful. Cross country pace is immense/license endangering. Looks the best Impreza bar the 22B.
Diff/water sprays/roof vent/tints make it really special..
All the birds look...

Only poss downside is lack of ABS but can be better for it esp in the snow!!!

If you can, go for the Type R if only for the reason that it'll prob hold it's value better in the long run, I hope!!!

Is it only the v-lims that have the smoked rear glass?
I presume all type R's have the folding mirrors and other luxuries that we never get in the UK?!?!?

I got a Version 4 Type R and haven't stopped grinning since. I wanted a 2 door so went for the type r, it is belting. Have let mates of mine have a drive and they liken it to the feeling when you're sat in plane accelerating for take off..whoomph, it is scary fast. Had a UK spec Prodrive edition before this and like it has been said, due to the diff control, if you put too much power down on a wet corner, be ready to put some opposite lock on. I went to Chris at scoobyscene.co.uk he always seems to have a good selection in.

I've recently bought a version 5 sti from Warrender in Northwich with 24k on the clock in superb condition for 14,750 so they are out there. Only drawback is running it on optimax with octane booster and around 20 mpg. But for the performance alone it's worth it. The 4 door is definately a bonus IMHO.

Do the STi's (both standard and r spec) have to be run with booster?
I run my UK mY98 on optimax, and wondered if this was OK??
If there is a mechanical reason (which I believe I have read on here before) for adding booster to optimax, then I will deffo use it (how much are we talking per tank fill?

Talking

Just thought would point out as shown this question Type R or Sti has been up before.

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?ThreadID=174396

I should know I posted it. The far majority went for the type R. It most peoples opinion it looks better, goes faster and once you get used to it and "tweak" it to your needs you can get far more enjoyment out of it ! Getting one in a couple of months. Sti 6 Type R for 15K. can't wait ! Although not 100% sure what colours they are available in as information seems to vary !

Get a type R/RA

I must admit that going from a WRX to a type RA V-ltd did have its differences, like the ride is harder (Bilstein adjustables and you don't get ABS and most people say my WRX looks better, + the gearing is a bit high on my RA.......but for that engine I wouldn't go back.
The thing absolutely flys, and to second what's been said before I must have lost the rear traction about 15 times in the first two weeks of ownership, once in third gear at 50 mph in the damp (scary!) but caught it every time.

BUT this was with the crap spec. Japanese tyres, now runs on 215/40/17 Eagle F1's (absolutely the dog's ***** tyres) all round and the thing handles like a go kart, haven't had any traction problems since . So if your worried about what's been said before on this thread either make sure the cars tyres, etc. are up to a good spec. and it should handle fine or don't get one if you don't think you can handle it (this is not a slur on anyone they are just dangerous cars if you don't treat them with respect) plus the brakes are crap as std

Just my 2 cents.

T.

I have read the previous post RE this subject, but was really looking for all the information I could find, so felt I should post again!!!
Many Thanks for all your answers , I can confirm that I will now be after a V5 onwards WRX STI type R.
Now, where am I likely to find one in sonic Blue???
