Question

Probably been discussed before. However, received a mail shot from the dealership I had the Scoob serviced/MOT'd back in August this morning. This included having the belts changed as well, although it only had 28000 miles, therefore the bill came to just short of a grand Since then I've done about 3500 miles.

Are there any benefits to having the interim service or should I wait until the year/7500 miles service to be done.? BTW they quoted 90 quid for this service, not a lot when you consider the last one!!

Yours thoughts please,

Cheers,

Ed

Is the car still under warranty? If so you will have to have the service.

Also is £90 a lot to pay for keeping the service record upto date, maybe in for a shock if you try and sell it with an incomplete service history.

Another point - why are you only doing 3500 miles in 6 months? If this is because you make a lot of short journies then this is hard on the engine and makes servicing more important than for someone who is doing twice that but just rolling up and down motorways.

Question

i have read a few threads this week with people quoting close to £1000 for a cambelt change service. Why? That cost is insane!!

How can a garage justify £1000 on a service, it doesnt add up to me?

Lee, the car is under an extended warranty (it's an 98 Terzo). Never thought about the warranty, good point.

Boost, I like to keep the Scoob for special occasions and therefore also run a very interesting 1988 1.6L Cavalier . I always warm the car up and let it settle before i switch off, and the runs I do usually do are pretty extensive. No popping to Tesco and back!

John, the service also included having a full SS system taken off/original put back on. This was because I saved 800 on my insurance if I had the original back on. A clue being Cheshire Police have proof the car does 97 on the M6.

you are way too nice Kitty. They were either trying to screw you or are incompetent. That's a lot of money to be screwed out of. Good to see you stuck up for yourself, lots of poeple wont.

Mistakes happen, even I make them occasionally It's easy to overlook details when you're busy. The car is more than 3 years old, so wouldn't normally be expected to have a warranty. I've not had any other problems with them, so I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt this time.

Thumbs up

Ed,
Even though you do low mileage you still need to service your car at the correct intervals, and as the intermediate services are dirt cheap (my last one cost me 54 quid as i provided the oil) its not really ripping deep into your pocket
This is a part of scoob ownership, its one of the things that you have to look at when buying the car, the running costs, the insurance, the fact that the car is a target for the scum of the earth..... so, would you not treat any of your possessions to the best that they can get or would you neglect them?
The answer seems pretty clear to me

Just to pick up on a point made:
--------------------------------------
Final price for the 45k service was £420,(including VAT but after SIDC discount.
--------------------------------------
So what discounts could I get with Scoobynet/Scoobycity and wich dealers give discount and how much?

I am thinking of joining Scoobynet as it has the best BBS but can I get better discount with SIDC?

Local Garages for me are Lancasters at Pangbourne, Adams at Aylesbury and Cross Country Vehicles at Witney Oxon.

any comments...............

Cool

Tony,

You've got a valid point there. Hopefully, I won't be in for any major shocks as everything seems to be in order (famous last words I know) and due to the lack of miles nothing will need replacing apart from the consumables.

I'll let you know,

Ed

Question

When will you learn?

Lancaster in Pangbourne, just compare their servicing prices!! They never fail to amaze me!!

Save yourself MUCH more than a measley 10% and take your car elsewhere!! I am not saying there are bad or anything, just that they are VERY expensive - you only need travel 35 miles to get much better rates!!

havent read the complete thread, but my 2 pence worth...

servicing isnt just about the upkeep of the servioce record, or about oil changes e.t.c. but it is there to also spot any potential problems in the future.

£1000 is a hell of alot for a service and cambelt!! was other work carried out? i run a garage and frequently service bills go up to £500+ because of repairs (welding, brakes, exhausts e.t.c)

a cambelt, as stated, should be no more than £400, and consumables aint that much more than most cars, i.e. oil isnt any better than what goes into a modern top spec merc or bmw. scoobys aint one of these real touchy cars, hell, you run in new engines on the cheapest oil there is!!!

anyway, as i was saying, £90 could save you ££££'s in the long run by spotting a problem before it develops...

The petrol and time involved in travelling an extra 70 miles would negate any saving on the work done.

I think someone said on here recently that new BMWs are annual servicing only now, but if there is a problem then it doesn't get looked at until a year later, hence the sudden increases in new engines for 318's 'cos the women driving them don't know how to maintain a car!

6 months, even if it's only an oil change and tyre rotation for service history and peace of mind.

I am only guessing but this sounds like Station Garage in Taplow, which the other Subaru dealer in the locality? Just a guess.

I had my 45k service done in December at a Subaru main dealer. The total bill came to nearly £690, which was a bit of a shock as I had expected it to be no more than £450.

The extra was due to the cam belt tensioner being replaced, as it had been found to be very worn when they replaced the cam belt. The dealership changed this without asking me, although they claimed they had tried to call and had left a message on my mobile for me to call them back. I never got this message. When I saw the bill, I queried whether the tensioner should not have been a warranty item, and was told it shouldn't. I asked around and found a few people had had them done under warranty, so I went back to the dealership to ask why mine was different. I was told the tensioner is a warranty item, but they were not aware I had a warranty. I pointed out I had bought the car, with warranty, as an approved use car from that very dealership 6 months before, so they should have been aware. I also pointed out that my SIDC discount had also been over-looked, despite the fact I had made a point of mentioning it when the car was collected.

The upshot was that I recently got a cheque from the dealership.

Final price for the 45k service was £420,(including VAT but after SIDC discount).

The moral of this story? Always question everything, as many times as necessary until satisfied and do not trust dealerships to get things right first time.

Having said that, I have no complaints about how the dealership handled it. I accept that mistakes happen, and once I'd brought it to their attention, they were very good about sorting it out.

Ajax, IIRC, Lancaster in Pangbourne, (and many other dealers), do a 10% discount on parts and labour for SIDC members. I think a year's membership is now £29.99. It makes sense IMO.
