Advice please....

I dont yet own an Impreza but I am looking to replace my car around Easter time. I am only 22, but have always driven performance cars (sensibly) and this seems to have helped my insurance quote. Unbelievably Privelidge insurance have just quoted me £1600ish for a 1996 UK Turbo (I have no points/claims) so its beginning to look like I can get one.
The only problem is that I do a fair few miles and so need to take account of economy - what mpg could I realistically get on a very long motorway trip, honestly sticking to 70-75mph? The car would be a standard 208/215bhp turbo, with maybe a K&N replacement element and it will be run on Shell Optimax, if that helps.
Also, are there any known problems with the mid 90's cars that I should be aware of, what is their general reliability like and what sort of money should I pay for a 1996 car with maybe 60,000 miles on it?
Thankyou very much for your help - hopefully soon I will be able to experience what all the fuss is about these cars...

When I hit 21 mine went down to £1200 (with priviledge)
From my 95 UK I was getting around 260 miles to a full tank of SUL, about £40.
If it's economy you want get a TDi GTi Golf :-)

I've just found the FAQ'a which seems to answer most things - very comprehensive. I am becoming sorely tempted. Also, when my girlfriend found out I was intending on spending about £6-7000 on a car she said "That means you could get a second hand Scooby." Brilliant or what?

Well don't forget the cost of running the car! I bought mine, which was originally registered in April 2001. Last Feb t had 17,000 miles on the clock. It goes in for its 50,000 mile service next week. No service has cost less than £500, its had 6 tyres in that time, and since getting a Shell Pluspoints card in Septemebr I now have enough air miles for a trip to Paris!
In fact I am looking at buying a secnd car to run on the savings of not doing 20,000 miles a year in the scoob!
Having said that I love the car!

im in the same boat as you dave. Just about to get my 1st impreza , 22 now .. soon to be 23 and running up with 3 yrs NCB ... and with my newly acquired 6 points .. quoted £1500 with Privelege who i have been with for ages.
If you do a lot of miles , can afford the petrol and servicing , then get the scoob ... if you cant ... then dont ... simple. I have looked into this so much and have spent a lot of time thinking about if i can run a subaru ...
All the time was spent thinking ... "flat 4 burble" .." subaru".."gorgeous noise" ...
