Fitting Quickshift right now - need a very quick answer
Hi I am fiting a quick shift right now and need to get it sorted quickly.
I am trying to remove the old shift. How do you get the bottom of the old shift out where it goes into the ball housing.
Thanks
Steve

Steve, with my UK 95 Turbo, getting the old one out was as suggestions above - push back and down hard. This took me ages to do and I'm sure that I hit myself in the process as it popped out!
Getting the new one back in was a different story - I tried everything, pushing down on it, hitting the top of the lever with a piece of wood / hammer. The whole of the "cup" and support was moving but it wouldn't pop in.
In the end I removed the circlip that holds the nylon sleeve in place. It was fiddly, requiring two screwdrivers to prise the clip out (as it kept just spinning round). I'm sure you can get circlip tools as there are two "eyes" that you could hook into.
Once clear, the nylon sleeve can be removed and fitted round the ball of the new lever - then placed back into the metal cup and the circlip refitted (just as tricky).
Also, once the linkage is re-attached you may need to bend the metal surround up slightly to allow first gear to be selected - this is normal for short shifts.
Good luck
Paul

Tweenierob, the "advice" on the web for fitting these is something along the lines of bash the hell out of it to pop it in / out. This didn't work for me so I went for the circlip removal option.
Where abouts in herts are you? I'm in lovely St Evenage
Steve, I'm sure that you are noticing any noises now you have changed something on the car. Mine always sounds different after a spirited drive. The shortshift should only alter the throw of the gear change, I can't see it placing any additional stresses on the 'box - it really did "tighten" things up for me, much more positive and no more missed changes (especially 1st to 2nd).

tap it bloody hard
some of the older cars have a bush retained by a circlip- removing this will make the removal easier as you can take out the nylon bush it sits in.
shouldn't have to go under the car / engine, though??

Thanks so much for all your advice.
I eventually did it.
Kempo and RRH - yes it is an old car, and it does have the circlip.(I didn't know this when I first posted)
This clip was covered in grease, once I could see it, it was a ba*tard to get out, I bent it. AGHHHH!
Had to trapse round and find a replacement, which I did but it was fractionaly too small. So heated it up and bent it out a little and alough not quite as tight as the old one it still holds the ball joint firmly in place.
Have taken the car out for a test drive. The shorter gear throw feels very good a vast improvement on the feel of the old one.
However there seems to be alot more noise coming from the box. When you acelerate you can hear a slight whine which wasn't there before and also a bit of background bearing noise here and there. The actual gearchange feels fine it is just the noise that is a bit worrying.
Is this usual?
Does fitting a quickshift place more strain on the box?
When cold it was fine but as soon as the box warmed up after a spirited 10mins across country the noises started. Can you get a higher viscosity oil which would help?
I don't want to put the old shift back in after all of the effort I have just been to.
What do you think
Best wishes
Steve
