Car accident
Hello guys,
I had an accident in the snow last thursday and was doing about 5mph tried to stop and couldnt so went straight into a curb(oh and a street sign) ouch my poor baby, the right front wheel had been pushed back into the body work, what damage do you think has been done, just the wishbone or we talking it could be a lot worse? it is only that wheel that has a problem nothing else on the car except a few scratches otehr than that, what do you guys think?

by the way it is a 99my Impreza 2.0t

Had a similar situ last night. I was messing around in a car park and completely misjudged my stopping distance - yes driver error
! Anyway, I was heading towards a kerb that fortuantely had a grass field after it. I realised I couldn't brake/engine brake in time and considered trying to powerslide off to the right! The danger was I'd not make it and hit the kerb side on which would do damage or potentially roll the car. I accepted the situ I was in and chose to take the kerb full on
I straightened the car to be perpendicular to the kerb and then straigtened the wheels. Seemed to work well and there was no tugging on the steering when I hit it. Kerb was about 6" BTW. I checked the car over visually and it steers striaght, etc. I assume on that basis that its fine and I got away with it. Is there anything I should look for or inspect?
Straight-line so I can't blame fuel surge

Doesn't bother me mate
When you are hooning around like that you have to expect that if you make the slightest error you stand to get burnt (a bit like pushing it at a track day). I'm just glad I made the best of a bad situation

I have just driven two miles down a main A Road at about 10 mph, absolutely no chance of stopping within 50 feet.. black ice all the way.
Bloody gritters have been spraying my bonnet for the last two weeks, and it's not even needed it.. Where are they tonight
I too have bent a wishbone on my old golf at about 5mph.. just slid sideways turning a corner.. no chance

Colimbia mate.....
I did exactly the same in my STi7 last Friday morning however have got away with no bodywork scratches.... however wheel was pushed into the wheel arch.
Dealer today has said need new wheel, disk (must have cracked it), steering arm and TCA arm. Plus labor and gemotery setup - around £850+VAT !!!!! - bummer man
Whats worse is that I wasnt even arsing around when i did it

ozzy I'd say my straight ahead speed was about 8-10mph but I couldn't guess what the lateral speed was. Put it this way it was a fairly loud bang/joult and the alloy had a nasty dent!! When I got out the car I expected the wheel to be at a funny angle!
Stephan,
With me seriusly i was not doing more than 5-10mph - not going on insurance anyway.
Worse thing was is that as I hit the brakes the ABS pops on and makes the car go faster towards the curb like a big FO tobbogon (sp ?)
I dont think the Impreza suspension can be that strong anway as for instance the wishbone is all alloy anyway. I did hit it straight on and there is a 3 inch chunk out of the curb too !
Most of these modern cars are designed to crumple in the event of impact. I guess its better to do that, rather than wreck the shell.

Flippin eck. My car launched itself about 8" in the air and lifted everyones @rses about an inch out of their seats
when I went over the kerb.
Here's me thinkin our rally cars were bombproof
Kenny,
Lateral speed
Hope you weren't trying a HUGE power slide in the snow/slush

Back end came unstuck and she followed the camber of the road and the direction of the slid into the kerb. Looking back I should have accerated hard to use the traction to pull her away from the kerb. Hindsight is great huh
kenny, you dont half talk some crap at times. When are you going to spend some money on a decent driving coach session? It's far better value for money that all this cash you keep spending on tweeking the engine. Almost every week you have some tale of woe or a near miss.
Wake up before you do some serious damage to yourself, you need help.

Been out tonight in what was at first a bit of slush on the roads to an hour later with about an inch of snow covering all the A roads round here.
It was my first time with Stell@ (my scooby) in the snow, she was great in a straight line at low revs, but turning and bends she was scary, all over the feckin place!! ABS was even scarier, she dosnt even want to stop in snow, just feels like your on a sledge heading for disaster.
Luckily I'm not a total Nitwit and got her home to bed nice and bonnie.
Basically she has too much power for you to even bother using pedal in this weather, I'm driving on Toyo's which with their tread pattern maybe not the best in snow, but brilliant in wet.
Forgot to mention I was side ways in 3rd at 70 as I ploughed through a load of slush on one of the B roads round here. And then 5 minutes later came head on with a wondering sheep (managed to avoid killing, which would have led to a boot full of sunday dinners and a nice warm wool cardy!).
Anyway have fun in the snow!!!

If I had £10 for every damaged car I've seen in Edinburgh today I wouldn't have bothered posting as I could have afforded a brand new set of wheels. I suppose all these other drivers are complete plonkers too. Snow/ice is a bitch, irrespective of the car, FWD/RWD/4WD, driver training, etc sometime there is **** all you can do. As I said looking back more power might have pulled me away from the kerb but then it could have taken me even harder into the other one!
when are you going to accept you screw up way too often? I hope it doesnt take a serious crash for you to realise you are doing something wrong.
Sure, people have bumps this time of year, but you make a habbit of having "moments" almost every day. That is unless you are a liar and make up the crap you post on this forum.

Thats because space was an issue, its a tight street. I'm not some car driving god that can control a sideways car in a street that is hardly any wider than the car
If I'd had the space I'd have put the power down but I didn't want to risk making a bad situation worse. In the end I chose to pray the car would stop in time. It didn't, i was wrong. These things happen. I can think of no non-condition (i.e snow) related incident since fuel surge day

You managed to hit a curb in an empty car park just yesterday. You just dont get the basic message do you?
Everyone can benefit from a days tuition from a quality coach, they can teach you things about feel you just wont think about in years of driving.
Why is it people are happy to get a couch to teach them how to play sports, or a teacher to learn to pass exams or understand a complex subject well, yet it's an afront to their manhood to accept they may learn something from a skilled driving coach?
The problem with people like you kenny, is you always have an excuse. Rather than thinking, maybe there was a way i could have saved that i just wasnt aware of. You think, ho hum, **** happens, hope i dont stuff it again, it wasnt my fault, it was a freak ocurance, i am not a driving god, no one could have saved that.
Yes there are times when you cant save a crash, but that is less often than people realise, you just need to open your mind and accept you may just be able to learn something, it is worth spending the money with someone who knows their subject.
Your general attitude to driving i find scary. You could learn so much if you gave yourself the chance to.

Saxoboy,
Driving like a **** is when you are unaware of, or do not care about the risks

so you were *unaware then*,therefore a ****,using your own definition of a **** that is.

sorry, but when i've had a lesson, i must have missed the bit that said "take hands of wheel and clasp together and repeat after me,"Our lord who art in hea..................."
so you have done a track day,and yet you PRAY at 8MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What will you do down Craner for example? 50 hail Marys and the recite the Koran? If you haven't been on a track but pretend to understand then you don't deserve anyones advice, particularly someone with Johns experience.
have the ***** to LISTEN to someone like John Felstead ffs, before you kill yourself.

the car decided to slip her tail and follow the camber of the road into the kerb The rear passenger alloy took the first hit and is wrecked (un-driveable). The car spun and nailed the passenger front one too although it seems to be just a bad kerbing (might be refurbishable).

Saxo, how the hell did you "wreck" an alloy "spin" the car and "nail" the front at 8 to 10 mph?
Either you are being conservative with your speed or optimistic with the after effect

For the record, your car park incident? I'd have tried the handbrake and spun it 180 degrees.
And for the record (2) I've been driving about all day in the snow yesterday, and having fun where lack of traffic allowed, but didn't hit anything.
Twice
pListen to John, ffs

In Kenny's defence (again
) it was sheet ice last night on most side streets around Edinburgh
I was in the area and watched in astonishment as a woman in a VW Polo must have slid at least 100m before hitting a removal van
God only knows why Kenny continues to post on here with all the slating he gets

The only thing you need to know when driving in snow is go as slow as you possibly can. It's not rocket science ffs.
If you go too fast, turn to sharply, brake too late, etc.. you're bound to hit something eventually.
I drive like there's a big fecking rusty spike stiking out the steering wheel and if I don't go around like I'm driving Miss Daisy it's gonna impale my head.
I think the majority of people are a little conservative when they mention just how fast they are going. It's like those that say, 'I was only doing 40' when they've barrel-rolled the car 6 times or it's sitting on it's roof
