Red face

Hi Guys,

I am new to this board after spending silly amounts of money on my mondeo (1.8) only to get 154bhp, I am now after an impreza.
Problem is I know nothing about them, ?
I have approx 8k to spend but do I spend 5-6k on a early model and spend the rest on modying, or fixing, ie new shocks, bush sets, bearings etc. I dont want to mod it much, exhaust chip and dump valve would be fine.
So what would you guys sugest, buy an import for 5k or a uk model for 5k or blow the whole lot on an impreza.
Any help would be good guys.

Thank you,

WRX will be more to insure but have more gadgets and performance then a UK car.

If you go for a Jap import, take it some to one of the many quality garages TSL etc. And give it a ruddy good service, cam belt etc.

Plus with a Jap car you'll need octane booster to get it up to 100 RON, unlike UKs which are happy with plain jane SUL.

Good Luck

Dan

Thanks for that danny,
I have seen alot of 1995/96 wrx's about for between 5k and 7k and all in perfect condition.
I think I will settle for spending 6k then the rest on a good service and anything else I can think of.
on another note, what about parts for an import, are they just as easy or are they the same as the uk models.

Thanks again.

Wink

Parts are as numerous as there are websites selling them, so don't worry on that count.
Spend more time looking into which mods will suit, whether the car's been modded before and by whom.

The only problem with a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) import AFAIK, is Subaru UK won't touch it, not even sell you parts for it.
But there are quite a lot of specialists around so check to see if any are local to you.
Cheers.

There's lots of places that specialise in Jap imports even some UK dealers will work on em.

There's lots of people who can get bits, but to be honest if you need anything put a post up in the Wanted section and someone is bound to have it, if not try people like TSL, Scooby Sport etc, or just post on the here and someone will help out, we are all a friendly bunch.

If I had 8k I would buy a the newest WRX or Ltd edition (STi) I could afford for 6k, spend 500 ish (major service) spend 500 on goodies for it and keep a grand in the bank as a back up if anything goes wrong.

Also keep your eye on the For Sale section there's always bits coming up for sale in there get some tuning bargains.

Any more question feel free to ask away

If you total budget is £12-13k why not buy a well sorted STi IV? You'll get more of your money back come sale time. Maybe you like tinkering though - which is fair enough

Thumbs up

Hi again, yeah I do like tinkering, my mondeo was in more bits that a lego set most of the time. I even developed my own intake for the mondeo.
It never worked right but hey atleast I tried. to much air I think and without putting it on rollers to compensate using the ecu I was stuck.

Go for it. I understand that the early STi engines have a closed deck block which is much better for tunng. You may want to investigate that avenue.

Make sure you post up your progress - complete with digital camera pics
