Thinking of upgrading my Sport for a toibo later this year, but I have to do a daily 80 mile motorway commute and am scared about my prospective fuel bill.

Now, I've heard of people driving "off boost" in a turbo, but how fast does this let you travel? (Assuming for the sake of argument a std uk turbo).

I do 60 miles a day on motorway/a roads, costs £10 a day.
It will be expensive, be aware.....

I can still cruise at 100mph + off boost on my STI-V, its just a case of not spanking it, just like driving a normal car on the motorway.

I need to drive below 65mph to keep off boost.

When I had the Turbo in std spec, I could get 380miles out of a tank (56 litre re-fill). What's the MPG on that?

Had to drive around like my Gran though.

Knock 50-60 miles off of that if you just want ot cruise at 70-80 on the motorway.

Know I have a de-cat zorts, I struggle to get 330 driving like my Gran.

I'm averaging 250 per tank on my bugeye, less if I'm just doing short local commutes to work etc.

Bloody fuel gauge is infuriating...you do 40 miles before it even drops from the full, and at 3/4 and 1/2 full I'm doing great, and then the last supposed 1/2 tank goes at twice the speed

Yep thats about right....

Being 'On' boost and 'Off' boost is not simply Rev's related, if you look at it this way:

1) 0 - whatever: Floor the car - You're on boost till the moment you lift off

2) 50 - 100: Gently press the accelerator, yes the pickup is slow, ie not booting it, but you can drive the car 'Off' boost whilst doing it, you're effectively not using the turbo, the engine is driving you.

3) 70+ motorway cruising - Say you're in no hurry, you're just going to get from a-d via the M25, you can do as per 2) and then when you are cruising ie holding a static speed on level ground I can drive mine at 100+ on -ve boost on the gauge, this is because you're not driving with the turbo, youre just on pure cruise mode, ie foot is on the gas just holding a constant speed.

Digressing onto fuel economy off boost driving will bring your fuel economy back to a reasonable amount, ie 300+ miles from a tankful, normal back lane driving I get about 190-210 max from a tankful.

mine just freefalls from when I turn the key

and define "off boost" do you meen 0pressure or -ve?

I get between 180-200 miles on a 40litre fill. manage 130 on first "half" tank too

when I first had the car I managed around 250 dawes + blitz + decat = crap econ thankfully I do f all miles

Get a decat downpipe. Since fitting mine I got a 10-15% increase in
fuel economy, even during the freezing weather; when not indulging myself. The increase in low down torque also means you get to higher speeds quicker.

Used to get a 20mpg, now about 23.

If you are worried about your fuel bill then a Scoob is probably not the right car for you. AFAIK even gently touching the accelerator when high speed cruising gradually brings the car on boost.

I do 80miles a day, 25miles each way on the motorway, rest on A and some B roads. I tend to use £10 a day. But i mainly drive at under 70 on the motorway when i am in fuel economy mode

i consistently get returns of 16-18 - lots of b-road twisties.

i guess that is about 215 - 240 miles per tank

had a scooby sport decat exhaust fitted though, so may reduce a little further??

i don't think you should worry about fuel when buying a scoob - takes the fun out of it IMO if you have to drive like granny!

I can set the boost alarm on my defis curently set to 1.3 bar as the car seems to peak around 1.2/1.25 bar (its actually measured in kgcm3 but close enough). I could set it to 0.1 bar but I htink it would become annoying . Like it has been said I can drive at high revs -ve boost pressure. Driving smoothly and not flooring the pedal will help but if you are interested/worried in fuel economy the scoob is the wrong car for you IMHO.

It's true mate. I've got rid of a 306 GTI6 and have an MY 2000 turbo. Big shock on the fuel, budget on 20 mpg. But the buzz is so addictive when its on full boost , love it. I'm still getting used to it. Just cut down on your food and other non vital items and instead feed the money into your scoob.

Not cheap, but I do love it, you will too if you take the plunge.

Quite true currymonster. One has to pay somehow for the feelgood factor in driving a scoob and IMHO it's worth every penny when I feel that force pushing me back into the seat. I drive a 1000cc Nova for work and when I'm in it I would gladly hand over my wallet to be back in my STi again.

Ozzy,mpg =.....ltrs divided by 4.55=galls. , trip(380,in this case)divided by galls.=mpg........you do the math(unless you know where my calculator is )

I wouldnt worry. Ive just swaped a sport (Phase II engine) for a std RB5 - no mods, and although mpg is worse, its not that much worse. The sport scoffed petrol anyway. Sport MPG averge was 30, turbo is 23. Although I did manage 27 on a 300 mile trip on the M6.

I do about 300 miles a week, and due to the larger tank I still fill up once every 5 days, only change is the extra £10 to fill a 60 ltr tank as oposed to the sports 50 ltr one.

i managed to get 38 quid in mine when i bought it, had fumes in the tank mind!That's 38 quid divided by about 77.9 p for optimax, divided by 4.54 for litres to gallons.........um.............er. Bugger it! Someone else work it out, grrr
