What some people don't understand is that the oil companies don't actually make that much money from petrol !!...more from the shop on the forecourt and the car washes !!...it's the GOVERMENT that TAXES the petrol !! Oil companies (the one i work for) make about 3.5p per litre...out of that comes all the exploration/salarys/garages etc etc...85%of it is TAX which goes to the GOVERMENT ! so you are hurting the oil company but they're taking the hit from the GOVERMENT...ant they're the ones who get all the money no matter who you buy your fuel from. if the GOVERMENT reduced the tax by 5-10% they petrol prices whould stay around the 71p area......i rest my case....even though i'm sure a lot of you are goung to have your pennies worth !! ^ that's what I was gonna say but couldn't be arsed In fact I'd go as far as to say some firms lose money on fuel, it's the government that need a kick in the nuts

Have people like this completely failed to realise is that the massive increases in petrol prices since Tony's cronies came along is virtually all additional taxation.
Despite that, and all the other taxes they've applied, the Hospitals/Schools/Roads etc are ****

Actually the refineries used by Tesco Sainsbry's etc are often BP supplied so that could hold a floor in your scheme!
Also if we are gonna do this properly we need to (and I never thought I would say this), think like the Americans. Last year when this happen the UK took a soft approach with the above mentioned 'not on a Tuesday' type approach. In the good ol' US they just stopped going to work (point blank refused!). In doing this the G'ovt had to act or the nation would have come to a grinding halt!
The power is in the people! there are 60-65 million of us and only a few thousand oil refinery employees............................catch my drift?
If we really got our act together, adopting the same methods of revolt as the Yanks, then Blair and his band of not so merry men would be forced to lower fuel tax to maintain the price equilibrium. This way even the Oil companies could still obtain their meesily 2/3% take from the fuel charge, and only the Government would be forced to stop taking the ****!!

Did I not read that if the petrol companies took nothing for the fuel that the tax we pay would mean that we would still be paying more than other countries?
And do I not remember the /hand wringing/earnest face/concerned voice/ PM "we need the tax or we will have no hospitals and no schools..."
Funny how he forgot to mention the 40% pay rise for him and his cronies at the time.
We have the same or worse services with more tax, just this week our local council announces an increase of 16.6% in council tax due to the reduction in the central grant.

Bush/Blair's spin doctors keep telling us that the war is NOT replated to Oil supplies as Iraq (and even Venezuela) have very little impact on world supplies.
So, why the **** are they increasing oil prices then?
Then OPEC announce that they're going to increase the supply from 23mb/d to 24.5mb/d to ensure sufficient supplies.
If there's enough oil being produced already and it's just OPEC that hold things back, WTF do we have to pay more for it
If it was just the usual supply/demand market forces then fair enough, but it appears like OPEC have power over both the supply and the demand and therefore can increase or decrease the price of crude oil whenever the feel like it
Then the oil companies have to hike prices coz their margins are so thin and the government rakes in a fortune in tax revenue.

Recent OPEC press release
http://www.opec.org/NewsInfo/PressRe...3/PR2_2003.htm
Looks like Venezuela has a decent input, but there's no mention of Iraq, the UK or even the US
