For a MY98 with the transponder thing in it for the immobiliser? Obviously I just need a blank that I can then get cut to my existing key, but how do I get the transponder added to the system so it can start the car?
Any idea of the cost of this lot? I've only got one key so **** scared of losing it since I won't be able to get another cut
PS Is the immobiliser built into the ECU on MY98 cars (JECS ECU)?

I believe the manufacturer has another set of two keys with immobilisers.
I know that BMWs come with a grand total of 12 keys, 4 of which are handed out to the owner. 2 big ones with remote, one without remote and one that only opens the door and starts the engine, no boot or glove box access (supposedly for hotel staff etc.)
Your car should have at least 4 or 6 keys made originally by the manufacturer, two of which were given to you; the other ones must be at Subaru HQ in Japan...

Even for a UK car?!? If this is the case it's starting to sound expensive already
Why can't they make them like aftermarket Cat2 immobilisers? You buy the transponder and simply use your master fob to add the new one. They could easily sell key blanks with chips fitted and all you'd need to do is get it cut and programmed.
Time to phone the dealer then.... followed by the bank to arrange a remortgage!
