Guy's.
we have a p[roblem in the village with the refuse collectors, they insist on reversing about 200m's, down the road I live in, I see this as unsafe, they do not have to do this, there is another way, so I was wondering if there is any limit to how far they're allowed 'by law' to reverse, they do this with a flashing light on the roof, but no-one walking in the road or anything, I have complained to the authorities several times, this isn't working, so I want to know what the law might say.
Cheers.
Ron.

All bin lorrys by law have a wide angle camara fitted to the back of the lorry , this is not only there for the driver to cheak on the guys loading the bins but so he can see to reverse .

i take it you have never driven a hgv and have no idea how long it takes and how difficult it can be to turn one around , and i guess he is saving him self loads of time by reversing 200 meters rather than trying to turn it around furter down the lane ......

Why not just leave them to it and let them get on with their job? Why is it dangerous, have they ever hit anything, killed anyone?

They drive these wagons everyday and have the camera on the back, I hardly call them dangerous... a bit annoying when they rattle wheelie bins out side my bedroom window at 7am but not dangerous!

You could report them to the police for being a nuisance, then the wagon would be impounded, problem solved

I can't think why people think I'm having a go at them, i merely asked a question with regard to the law, it happens every week, I didn't know about the camera, i'm not concerned about my safety, just that of other peopes kids who tend to run around with complete disregard for anything like road safety, believe me, the last thing I want to see is a flat child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When we rang their office, the person on the phone was appawled, and said that it should not happen, and they would get it stopped, that worked for 1 week, the guys must be a bit daft to gop back to the same routine that quick! but then, pay peanuts get...............

Maybe rather than complain about the bin wagon you should start educating the local children not to run under the wheels of a reversing truck?

In the military, you cannot reverse any HGV without someone outside of the vehicle directing you. I often see HGV's reversing into loading bays/side roads etc without anyone directing them and am amazed there aren't more accidents. They assume all pedestrians and cars will get out of their way. You cannot rely on your mirros when reversing any large vehicle.

All refuse trucks have more than 1 person in them. Why don't they use one of the other guys to see the driver back when reversing?

As for educacting kids, it has been proven that kids below a certain age have no road sense and cannot be taught it. This is why they abandoned the green cross code I gather.

According to an advert on the radio at the moment, teenagers are the most likely group of pedestrians to be killed. Can you imagine having to escort a teenager everywhere they go???

Question

I have HGV 2 for rigid wagons like bin lorries, and AFAIK there's no limit to how far you can reverse.
It'd be very difficult to enforce too wouldn't it?
If you really want to make yourself unpopular: you could try approaching the police traffic division for their views on the safety of the manoevre (sp?).
But if you do, win or lose, be prepared for refuse all over
