Chris, they dont usually, they are supposed to fit a device to your dash board then take it 4 a spin, there rolling roads make a fine mess of your diffs!!

Chris

Make sure you stay with the car at mot time and be vigilant !!!

I went to my usual garage for my STi's first MOT, being a Type R I was worried about the consequences on the centre diff of doing a brake test

Make sure you tell 'em before hand though, as the bloke was driving mine onto the ramps, and the rollers were immediately before this, when he picked up the control box, you've never seen me move so fast!

Better to be safe than sorry

from the testers manual

Certain vehicles should not be tested on a roller brake tester, eg vehicles with
More than one driving axle permanently engaged
Limited-slip differential
Belt-driven transmission
Brakes for which the servo operates only when the vehicle is moving
These vehicles should be tested using a properly calibrated and maintained decelerometer or a plate brake tester designated as acceptable for the statutory tests, see Sub Section 3.7 B, page 25, and C, page 26.

link is here
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_370.htm

print it and take it with you

bit of advice though as long as they don't check the brakes till after they have checked everything else then dont mention it but ask how the car is so far before you mention the brake testing then you shouldn't get the "i'll get the smart **** " type reaction

The guy didn't bother in the end. He kept trying to tell me I could disable the AWD by taking a fuse out... I finally convinced him he couldn't, and he weas going to take it to a place with 4WD rollers, but he couldn't be arsed and just asked me if the brakes were okay. Judging by the pristine condition of the rest of teh car, he believed me and gave me my slip.
If 1940's ****boxes can pass the test, I'd be very surprised if any Scoob wouldn't...

Hi,
I too had questions with the MOT brake test recently.
As stated it shouldn't be tested on single rollers...but it shouldn't cause any problems if only a quick test I was told on here.
Even so the testers should be aware of this issue in my opinion and work to the standard test which does specify a procedure for this type of vehicle!!

I did read in my handbook about the fuse to disable AWD but this is just for the Automatic transmission models

cheers...melon

When they did mine they had an antique looking device which they used to use before rollers, They put in the car and took it for a quick spin. It might not even have worked for all I know, the bloke might of used his own judgement?
They passed it anyway and didn't attempt to put it in the rollers :-)

The guy who did mine was a Cosworth specialist so knew of the problem. He took about 3 secs. per axle - no problem.
