Hi can anyone answer this please

I went to look at a impreza for sale yesterday
MY00 30k miles no mods 9 months warrenty left.

the guy took me out in it, under hard exceleration as he changed between 2nd to 3rd a loud single thud came from the engine, I only heard it once. is this normal?
he said it was the turbo then changed his mind to the dump valve, he said it always did it .

i looked at another one previously and I didnt hear it, although the bloke was'nt excelerating as hard. Can anyone clear this up as im slightly nervous about buying a problem car!!!

Also as a long shot - the car was purchased from INTERMOTO- liverpool, this then shut and moved to jaguar house. the guy said he was sent a letter to get it serviced there so it next 2 stamps are jaguar, which is a bit strange! if anyone can back this up it would be helpfull. I'll give subaru a ring anyway to check the warenty

thanks

It's impossible to say what it is, but all I like many others would say is that there are plenty of cars out there so just keep looking, jag history and his idea of what the 'loud bang' is sounds a bit strange. Personally I'd look at other cars.

From your description this sounds like the diffs thudding. When you change gear quickly and get hard on the gas the diffs very often give a loud thud. It not particularly brilliant and can be avoided with a slower change or by riding the clutch a little during the change.

If it is just diff thud then I wouldn't worry about it unless its really severe, loud, etc.

Walk away. Theres so many cars about for sale at the moment, it won't be hard to find a good one. If theres anything that seems amiss, its not worth risking that amount of money.

I'm with Saxo Boy, about it being a diff thud.

Mine does it when I really rag it

Cheers

they are right about intermoto-liverpool / jaguar house servicing.all part of same group apparently. but as said before there are plenty of cars around so wait and find one you are happy with.

Chazbo,

Sounds like the diff to me as SB already suggested. My own car (MY99 RB5) has always done this (from new) when shifting quickly. I wouldn't read too much into him changing his mind since he just may not know.

Only noise for the Turbo should be a wooshing noise from the wastegate and the dump valve would make a pssssht noise - if that makes sense.

It's the rear diff that I have always noticed the thud, so sound would come from the rear of the car and not the engine bay.

Stefan

I get the odd thud from my diffs too, always have. A major thud coming from the engine is a different matter. I had a thud from a turbo once and that was the last it breathed.

I get it too sometimes but it was worse on my MY01 Legacy 2.5GX. Very fast gear changes seems to cause it.
