Thinkning of buying a scooby sport
#1
I currently have a MK3 golf gti and have had a range of VW gtis over the last 9 years and reckon its time for a change.
Thinking originally of a E36 bmw or a scooby. BM's are either silly money or beaten stupid.
I am looking to spend around 5K and like the idea of a scooby sport (cant warrent turbo costs and for 5K a clean turbo aint going to be easy to find!)
What are they like to drive/performance? anything to look for other than fsh etc.
Any opinions/advise gratefully appreciated.

i ran one for 2 years, superb car. Not huge power, but they make up for it in terms of torque and light weight. The only thing they really need is a set of 16" turbo wheels and good tyres, do that and you will have a great car.
You should pick up a nice MY98 for that sort of money.

We've had a blue sport MY99 with air-con (hold out for this if you can) since February this year, we've covered about 8k in it, treated it well. Regular oil changes etc, ok it's not the quickest of cars but holds the road well and well...i just love it !
Got a Scooby sport exhaust on it....very throaty. Just enjoy driving it really, just don't worry about the fuel consumption..but then anyone who owns a scooby doesn't !!!

Had one for 18 months, 141k on the clock (didn't put that on in 18 months before anyone comments)
Ran as sweet as a nut, faster than the peugeot I had B4 good handling I thought (until I went for the Turbo MY00 recently, different animal)
Was imprezed with the sport all the same, these cars deserve respect

Thank you for all the advise and it has kind of convinced me that a sport would be a good move, plus the scooby culture seems comparable to the GTI lot which I reckon is an advantage.
Once new year is out of the way I think the golf is going up for sale!
All been well I will see you in the new year.....

I bought a sport over a turbo as I've got 9 points and a recent write-off, so the insurance on a turbo was just no go.
In it's standard form the handling is a bit too soft with far too much body-roll. I took it to...you guessed it....TSL ! for their Eibach springs/geometery setup mod and it changed in instantly into a different, far better handling car. Cannot recommend this mod enough, and at £325 ish inc vat it won't break the bank.
Also got a magnex full system (bit too noisy imho), ITG filter, superchips chip and EBC Greenstuff pads.
Nice little car now - still a bit slow but at least that'll keep my license in one piece for the next couple of years when I'll be looking for a late classic turbo instead...

I'll be honest with you, you won't be that impressed with the performance of a sport. You probably would be better off waiting a little longer until you can afford to buy, insure and run a turbo!
I had to set my turbo a year ago, and I had the choice of an Impreza sport or another car. I chose the other car, which was a mk2 8v Golf with suspension and breathing modifications, and I don't regret my choice at all!!!

I've driven quite a selection of 2.0l large family cars and of all I would say the slowest is the Impreza Sport.
A mondeo or vectra 1.8 will hammer it in acceleration.
I also don't think there is as much grip as people claim although the ride is nice and smooth.

Just to convince you even more, buy one!!! Bought the replacement for it in March, 2.0 GX (basically all the same consumables) and absolutely smitten with it. Could'nt agree more with John Felstead about 16" alloys, i'm hopeing to get a set of 17" WRX's after the New Year (money permitting).
Enjoy when you get it, Scooby

marc_ely your entitled to your opinion even if it is a load of ****.
I had a vectra 1.8 before my first sport. It was not faster to 60, or 100. It was not faster full stop. It was soggy in corners and had no grip in wet bends. As for snow & ice
My dad used to have a 2.0 mundano at the time too, so I drove that. Nice car but I couldnt live with the looks and rep image. So sport it was 4 me! Now on my second sport, a phase 2 sport special, with a few quiet mods, and am well pleased.
BUT - I'm off to falkirk today to view and probably buy an early crimbo pressie - an RB5!!
Ive thouroughly enjoyed my sport years tho.

could'nt agree more with most of the above comments
102K still runs sweet as a nut
car had most of the kit on when i bought it just added rear spoiler, lowered it, and brakes and wheels and STI interior
how can you compare it to a rep mobile these cars have "cred" as my kids (17 and 14) keep telling me
(just looked at what i've written how boy racer is that!!)
get one mate

If you can afford the overheads of a turbo - and before anyone starts, they are significantly higher - I know from experience.
Then the Sport or GX is a good choice, it may not be the quickest 2ltr car on the road of its size in the dry, but it is in the wet, and lets face it the UK is wet most of year.
I bought a GX instead of joining the vectra/passat/modeo/golf or whatever crowd, because I wanted something with a low(ish) insurance rating and because it just feels more stable in all conditions due to the AWD (I assume) over the two wheel drive alternatives.
Just my opinion.

Agrees with DrEvil & a couple of other ppls points made.
Not too sure about being hammered by a 1.8 Vectra ?????
I havent. Seems a diff of opinion between marc_ely & nuc pond,
i would go with Mr Pond on this occasion.
Handling on mine is gr8, for the guys with springs, geomtry
& larger wheels/tyres it must be awesome.

Merry Christmas to you too you miserable to$$er
Sports are an excellent way into Impreza Turbo ownership if you are on a budget and are, IMHO, one of the best naturally aspirated 4WD Saloons and estates available in their price range

Has I said at the start the Sport has not got the Turbo speed. Add the Eibachs, 17inch wheels, Sport Zorst, the rep mobiles might give you a good run on the straight thats all. A Renult 21 is no faster (fact) when we hit the roundabout M1 Junction 29, what a bag of ****e. Unstable was not the word, his heart must have been in his mouth. Goodbye Renult 21.

I'll let you know after the christmas rush is over - I'm only getting to a PC once every few days at the moment (old folks not got broadband ).
It's a 97R and has 42000 on the clock at the moment - which means the big service is now due (cambelts etc.) It needs a new set of tyres, and the brake pads need changing.
I'm happy to put the car through its service, but will price it accordingly. Will be putting it up for sale at approx 6K including this service, tyres etc (tyres being Toyo Proxes).
I'm happy to wait as long as needed to get the right buyer - the new WRX doesn't arrive til some time in March.
