IMO, classic values are bound to drop further still as they're all getting rusty and rattly now and need MOTs

Merry Xmas,

Craig

If that's the case, why not take the initiative to trade up to a better car before bug fuglys start to recover?

And a happy New Year,

Paul

Red face

Hi,

The Scooby I owned for the last 18 months which I sold two weeks ago has been the worst car I ever owned for loosing value!!! My car was worth £12,300 when I bought it and I had to let it go to a Stealer Dealer for £8,000 that's a loss of £4,300 (35%) in 18 months. I new I should have bought a BMW 328i Sport Coupe, it would have held it's value a lot better.

My old Astra Convetible MK3 2.0i only lost 45% in 3 1/2 years!!

I won't be rushing out to buy another one either until things sellte down. I'll get a bargain 5K one in a few years time

Scooby's are great cars and my MY97 had no signs of rust. All cars after three years of age require M.O.T.'s so what is your point here?

Cheers

RickyD

When I bought mine in 2000 a 3 year old Turbo was selling for about £14,000 - more or less the same as now (See Parker Guide website).

Hang on to your car for longer if you don't want to get stung by high depreciation IMHO.

don't ******* talk!!.....i bought my type-r in march this year, and had to let it go for £2000 less (and i fitted an exhaust, dumpvalve, boost guage etc...)....it was the older hape dash, but still was a mint car every other way.....maybe a cossie would be the better way to go??

Question

Well I bought a new MY00 for £21,309 and sold it in February this year (after 22 months) to a dealer for £12,650. Gutted at the time for getting such a poor price (Glasses guide price was £14,000) but nobody wanted the bloody thing and it was immaculate.

Car was up on the forecort for £16500 and it sold within 6 weeks

I dread to think what dealers are offering for MY00's as trade ins now. I am not talking Subaru trade ins against STi 7's (they are going to offer a much better price) but trade in's against non Subaru's.

I am guessing about £9000?? Oh and don't believe parkers price guide as Impreza's are falling so quickly in value and there are so many of them about that the guides can't keep up.

Zero extra depreciation in 2 to 3 years? It's a car, not a house...

Soon it wont really be viable to buy in from Japan as Classic shapes are holding their money very well and in many cases worth more than bug eyes.

Paid £6.2k for mine 21 months ago, done 40k miles since (now 108k), worth £5k ish now & rec'd £2k from the tax man for the pleasure -
Moral of the story - Buy a fully depreciated car that some other bozo has taken the pain on, then you're quids in.

Why do all you peolpe worry about what your cars are worth? Who cares unless you are actually selling the thing! Also why do people on here buy a car and then sell it within a year? This will most certainly lose you money! The days of Imprezas holding their value or appreciating have gone! Why would Subaru let us make money on second hand cars when they can simply supply what is demanded and make more money themselves?! And all this bull$hit about the old shape being worth more then than current shape, well it's only yourselves that you are fooling. But if it makes you feel better then what the hell....

Traded my MY99 (uk) with 52k on the clock 3 weeks ago. Got £10,500 as a trade in against an Alfa 156 Sportswagon.

Got the 156 for £12,500 (it's 10 months old with 9k on the clock) - the 2.0 Veloce version (leather, sports suspension, etc).

Pretty happy with the deal.

I'm new to this scooby owning business. I bought a Nreg McRae limited edition in good nick, but paid a dealer 10K for it, sounds like im going to loose a fortune.

Scotsman,

you did very well - I bought the identical car (MY99 with 52K) in immaculate condition, full FSSH and 'Mature' owner for £7700 this weekend.

I assume that he gave you that price as a reduction off the window price of the Alfa

I paid £14000 for dbm my00 10 months ago px it against a new wrx got £11500 for it which I thought wasnt bad they sold it within 48 hours for £14000. So I think this drop in prices is a load of
bo11ox and its people just giving there cars away!

A few points.

1. It's Christmas, and always a buyers market at this time of year.

2. If you buy from a dealer there will always be 500 - 2000 between the trade price, and what you have paid.

3. Cars depreciate, that's what happens. I always try to put a half decent deposit down, and make my payments cover what I consider the depreciation to be. That way, I get close to getting my deposit back. I've got a mate with a newish 911 who is looking at 15-20000 depreciation over two years unless he goes to a Porsche dealer and buys another Porsche, all this from a car with "good residuals."

OK, £500-£1000 I don't mind, but last weekend I went to Listers for some bits for my MY00 Turbo (rear brake pads) and spotted a nice looking MY00 in silver with 18k on the clock for £14.5k. Asked them what they would give for my current MY00 with a/c, prodrive wing etc but with 52k on the clock (bearing in mind they had one with 59k on up for £14k). To say I was a bit 'put out' at the offer of £8.5k was an understatement. I can only assume from the similar car that they would put mine up for about 14k, so £5.5k isn't a bad profit margin.

Needless to say, I'm not bothering....I went from serious about changing, to serious about leaving, in about 5 seconds!!

Went to Tiley in Bristol to look at a P1 on the weekend, and
got told that the value of MY97 turbo dropped £925 in the glass
book last month.

******* ell.

Then he offered me £6000 for MY97 turbo with 60K.

Still want to but the P1 so MY97 will have to go private.

Fast boy - bl**dy hell! hell of a low price for a MY99 - good deal!

The window price of the Alfa was £13,999 but got £10,500 for mine and the Alfa for £12,500 (£2k difference paid) as they had the car as a demonstrator and had been trying to shift it for a few months (it's dark amazon green with the natural tan leather interior - perhaps not as easy to shift as black leather). They were also at the end of the month and I got it for that price and for that trade in if I did the deal in two days (and they got the sale in their Nov figures).

Good timing from my side

The fact that I was about to spend £300 on new front disks and pads for the Scooby made it easier as well.

Sorry - don't quite agree with the £500 - £2000 margin on top

Many (not all) franchised dealers seem keen to work on 30% margins between the true trade value (ignoring all offsets) and the windscreen price when its first put on the forecourt.

If they're buying in at say a true £10k, they'll be targeting £13k and reducing to £12.5k or 'over'-allowing on the price to swap.
