I've read on here recently that the STI is only for use with SUL yet on the Subaru website, in STI specs, it says it is a minimum of 95RON which obviously isn't super! Can somebody clear this up as I'm planning one but my nearest SUL dealer is 105 miles away!

the Jap spec one needs SUL (plus OB) the UK one oficially doesnt, it should run OK on 95 RON.
I would not drive it hard on 95 Ron though, it really needs SUL to be at its best.

STi can run on RON95 but it runs like a dog!!
I have tried RON97 Sainsbury's cheap and nasty performance not much better than standard unleaded.
Runs best on Shell Optimax.

I run my StiV7 nearly every day on standard unleaded - goes like a train - absolutely no problems at all - virtually no different.
Just had PPP done and running on standard unleaded makes no noticable difference at all.
Ran my last turbo for 2 1/2 years on normal unleaded with no problems at all. I think if subaru say 95 ron is ok, you can take it that it definatley is.
Hope this helps

yes, i know they det their nuts off on 95 RON when driven hard, hence my comment.
The oficial line is they are OK on 95RON and the warranty backs that up, but i personally wouldnt run one on that.

Ive just changed from Optimax to BP SUL and there is a noticeable improvement.
However, to answer the question the manual/brochures etc say 95 RON is OK, but on the inside of the fuel flap on my STi7 is a sticker that says "97 RON Only". Not a very consistent message from Subaru.

Inside the fuel door on my [gold alloyed, Blue Mica, beautiful bug-eye] MY02 STi7 it says in four languages (English, French, German, Italian) - use RON98 / Sans Plomb 98 / Super Unleaded ONLY. *ONLY* is sorta highlighted...like they are making a point of it
Dunno about the UK models but I was well warned by all and sundry not to go anywhere near RON95 with the STi. For standard WRX's it's okay but definitely not the STi's.
Just my 0.02 Euro centimes.

Hmm, not the conclusive evidence I'm looking for! I have a MY99 PPP and have run it on 95RON with no problems as I'm not that hard a driver (read no track days). Any more for anymore?

Sandy,
When I'm back home in Caithness I have run the car on 95 ron with no problems, but the car does run better on 97 ron fuel. I normally run Esso 97, as this is my local dealer down here in Inverurie.
My mate (Sti 5 driver) ran me to Glasgow the other day to collect a 4x4 for my Dad, and we filled the car with Optimax down there and he said it did not run so smooth on the road home at brisk speeds. Other than that I can’t help much, other than to recommend using Millers octane booster. We get it for £20 a box in ABZ and I use it a lot, especially when we are going out to play

I have to say that I think mine runs better on SUL than Optimax. Reciently I had to put in regular and where it run ok and with no noticable det, the performance was definately off par.
