No mine was a 95. It passed the emissions test for the MOT. However, speaking to the guy i paid to do it (ie travel down to the SVA etc), he said it has passed the MOT but would fail the SVA as it would something to do with the European laws. Couldnt get it though cause it passed the MOT??!! So we changed the exhaust anyway. Another was is by a muffler which apparently is a tube that goes in the middle of the exhaust thus reducing the diameter and making the noise not so loud. I had this problem is my exhaust is a big one and apparently sounds very loud
If you have any questions, drop me an email and ill tell you everything i found out. Email is frankandreas3@hotmail.com

hi all, was just wondering if some importers out there could answer a few questions for me as im thinking of importing a early wrx from japan. The company in japan selling the car sorts out all the paper work and arranges shipping to a port of my choice. The thing i want to know is will i have to pay customs and vat?I have been told that as it is a personal import i would not have to pay any of these. Please could someone clarify this for me, all help appreciated.

I afraid you will have pay the normal duties, and tax..If your car is older that 10 years you don't have to pay the VAT...
I have just imported my car, check the costing with your supplier, don't forget the landing charges and custom duties as well.. Best of luck, and I hope you find your car.. Don't go for cars under a grade 4 at the auction... grade 4 and above would be my advice..!!
OJ..

As above VAT and duty, and clearance and SVA are all aplicable if you are buying a WRX.
As for auction grades a personal inspection is better than going with just the auction grade. As with most things in this world one persons grade 3.5 could be someone else's 4 or someone's 3. Try to get a look at the auction sheet. Most bits will be unreadable but you can get the general idea about mods, marks, grades, tyres, mileage etc.

yeah just imported mine recently and had to pay vat at 17.5% and import duties at 10%. Do you know what company you are buying it from? There are ways round this (depending on the company) where you pay less vat and import duties.
Also be careful with the SVA test. Mine passed on friday but it was a pain in the ****. Had to change the exhaust, steering wheel and headlamps. Just things to ask about. Its better to pay someone to do all the work for you. I imported mine over myself but the company i dealt with, they had someone over here who sorted out collecting it from the doscks and taking it the SVA for me. Much easier and less hassle!

thanks for the replies, just one more thing.. if the cars imported to ireland and registered there and then brought over to england, do the same charges apply, ie 10% customs and 17.5% vat?
