Unhappy

As I have got a few K miles on the clock, I thought I would 'open her up' so to speak. At an indicated 137 m.p.h. a very strange noise came from the engine. It sounded like a deep tone horn, but clearly it was no such thing. I backed off straight away. It has never done this before in any gear at any r.p.m.

Any ideas?

It could have been wind noise Tony, did you have a window slightly open?

Windows were all closed, and it was not windy outside. Never heard a noise like it.

Sorry to state the obvious, but at that speed it could be tyre noise. What tyres do you have on the car?

I get the same type of sound when I brake from say 100 to 20kph in a shortish distance. I think it may be the fact that I have warped my discs, but I think it's probably tyre noise as well.

If you have nothing sensible to add, please stay in the muppet forum or on the Skoda BBS or wherever.

Can't say that i've experienced anything like this. Have had an indicated 143 on the clock and was amazed by how quiet it was over my previous MY00 which sounded like a door was missing! LOL Would suggest getting it looked at as mystery noises at these speeds can't be a good thing.

Question

Tony

Did you get a loss of power with the noise or just the noise?

Could it be with the atmospheric conditions you were starting to choke the turbo (ram too much air into it so that it can't handle it)?

Apple - I did not notice a lack of power. It was still accelerating. I built up the speed in 5th from 90 mph. I did not redline it in 4th first.

Chubbs - No downpipe yet. Still have not made my mind up

Evo Kid - LMAO I meant there was no excessive adverse wind.

howsabout something resonating in the wind - if there's no local air movement, you've effectively got a wind speed of 137mph?

which directions are the horn trumpets on the 01, are they or anything else in the airflow?

Apple

ps it wasn't the screams of passengers was it?

It is tough to describe beyond what I have already said, and I suppose anything is possible. It was a 'F*ck me I've broke it' sound. As for passengers - there wasn't any.

there is a problem with some new 01my scoobs where it gives a resonating sound from about 3000 rpm upwards in each gear we have heard it is from the rear crossmember that the gearbox is bolted to and i.m are trying out modded crossmembers on a few cars to see if it cures the problem

hiya Tony! funny you should bring this up! i know exactly what you mean, i had a go in a mates MY01 on sat, when i booted it in fourth it got to 6000 rpm 120 mph and that strange howl type horn noise came in, its the sort of noise that makes you back off immediately! so i did it again bang on 120mph 6000 it did it again, scary, this car was chipped so i wasnt sure if it was out to do with that. i didnt dare try 5th gear as it wasnt mine and that noise was worrying. when i got back my mate had noticed it, he reckons it wind noise through wiper blades? could be? it did come from around the bulkhead area or front of screen n/s. let me know if you suss i. cheers Lee

My 01 WRX had this problem...At about to 190 km/h same sort of noise you described in the first post. The problem was coming from the front windshield which is not very well sealed on the car.
It's a known problem and a technical notice is edited by Subaru. After a little modification by my Subaru garage, all is OK !

It's not a 'feature' on all MY01 cars. Never noticed it on my travels trough Germany. I did notice that at those speeds the tank is empty in one hour... wow... who cares about the noise, fix that hole

Tony....yes, I've had the same thing!!...I think its the same anyway...at 100mph or just over, I get a whine, high pitched like a finger around a wine glass making it sing.

I've told the dealer, but they have to take the car off me for a day to define it,.. and I havn't got round to it yet.

Does that sound like the same noise?

Cheers,

Rich

Thumbs up

I've had an indicated 150mph in my MY01 WRX (with PPP) but had noises whatsoever, in fact I was very suprised how quiet it was. I was of course on a private road at the time!

Darren.

PS, it wasn't maxed out, any idea how accurate the speedo's are on 01's?

I'm afraid this appears to be a feature on the MY'01, mine does it and so do the two demostrators at B&C (wagon & saloon).

I had a TR6 a few years back, and at max speed/load you could actually see the fuel guage going down.

I think that makes the fuel consumption for the 01 to be approx 13 mpg at max speed! (assuming you used 50 litres and were actually doing 145 mph), that's not bad, I reckon that my Westie ysed to do about 8 mpg on a track day!

Thanks Tony,
I posted a problem with high pitched whistle/horn noise about six weeks ago after having a detachable tow bar fitted to my MY01, to tow my race bike.
But had no responce, it happens at about 120mph and sounds if its coming from the middle of the scoob.
I'm gooding to get it check out next service, if I remember again.
The scoob has now completed 12500 miles and is running sweet as a nut, with the P1 18" fitted and scoobysport back box.
