I've got the oem Subaru STi mudflaps on my STi7. You do need to drill some holes in the inside of the arches to fit the brackets...one hole each side at the rear for a nut and bolt, and two holes each side at the front for self tapping screws.
Otherwise its just a case of removing the plugs in the trim to fit the outer part of the bracket.
It took us about an hour each corner, which as well as fitting the flaps, included taking the wheels off, cleaning the brake calipers, and topping up any missing patches of underseal.
If you're thinking of making them, I'd suggest you contact Megabusa per the thread above to see if he'll give you the dimensions.

I have fitted the P1 style small mudflaps front and rear and they look OK and do the job, they are also very cheap compared to the Sti style ones which are well expensive.
I hope this helps....

Arron,
I've got the Prodrive ones which were designed for the P1. They fit on the STi and are great because they do their job but you can hardly see them.
If you haven't actually purchased yet, I'd recommend the PD ones over the full ones....
