Question

325 bhp V 240bhp.

Eeerrr........what do you want from a car?

It is going to be faster, have a nicer interior and better paint work. I just hope it is a coupe.

M3's are nice cars.

The M3 Evo (321BHP btw) is easy to live with and getting the back out is half the fun of having a RWD car.

Hire one for a week and see whether you want to live with it.

I currently own both!!

They are so different; the WRX feels raw where as the M3 always feels refined...

Might be selling M3 soon if interested

Agree with AWD, drive it for a while and then decide.

make sure the VANOS valve system is OK, hold the revs at 1500 and increas slowly to 3000RPM, listen for a grating noise from the engine. Do it with the bonet up because the sound proofing can mask the tell tale noise at low revs. I had two VANOS' go on my old E36 EVO but fortunately BMW warranty covered the replacement, otherwise I would have been looking at a bill of around two grand.

Question

Towser, was this VANOS problem on the EVO engine or the earlier one - do both suffer from this as a common fault?
I'm also looking at the M3 EVO Coupe for my next car as well (currently got a 98 WRX), but my visions are clouded by the EVO V and R33 Skyline which can be had for similar money... What attracts me to the M3 though is the nicer interior, more equipment, better fuel economy, lower insurance and that great normally aspirated M Powered engine. What turns me off a bit though is that they're quite common and can't be tuned further very easily.

Last car was E36 M3. Part/exed for a V5 Type R. Think you will be disappointed with the power delivery of M3. No sudden turbo rush. Beef from 3500rpm to 7500rpm. Great for straights and convoy killing but not so on the twists.

scoobysnacks - it was on the EVO M3, not sure about the non EVO model. Mail me off line if you are interested in my experience/nightmare with M3's.
