The best driving roads in the UK are in Aberdeenshire!

(steps aside to make way for the torrent of abuse)

Nope, disagree !

I think that part of the Bunkry - Fettercairn road (Cairn o' Mount) may be in Angus

Surely, there's a website that shows the nicest drives in the UK?

Remember the Saturday Torygraph motoring section having a 'great drives' section on the back page. This'd be a good idea, must be out there somewhere.

Stewart,

I also disagree. There are indeed some good driving roads in Aberdeenshire, but there are some far better ones (quieter/faster/more scenic) over on the west coast of Scotland.

Western Highlands are the best roads in the UK, probably the world.

Just a bit far to go from south London, but worth it!

Wales is too small, and relatively busy, and the quality just isn't the same. Plus you have to encounter the Welsh if you get out of the vehicle....

Another vote for the Western Highlands. Can't forget Applecross either

Aah Chris, Applecross is wonderful, first went there aged 8 with my parents. Must go again soon.

Trouble is no decent car at my disposal for highland roads at present.

The B660 Bedford to Cambridgeshire crossing over the A1 is good as far as southern England roads go.

zoog,

Sorry to burst your bubble but have you been up the B660 recently? It has been ruined very recently where most of the good twisty bits have been turned into 30 and 40 limits with short stretches of nationals. The top end may have been left alone but the lower half (Bedford to Kimbolton/Stonely) is dead (

RE: the original question/statement, whilst Scotland is fantastic, it just can't be as good as the Isle of Man where the main circuit is of fantastic quality (the Mountain is basically a two lane race track!!!!! ) and there are NO speed limits - that has to be the best road ever, a nicely surfaced, empty (becuase mostly they are), quality twisty road that you can legally go any speed you think is safe........

Matt,

I know all about the Mountain Road, however, I think you'll find that the Isle of Man isn't "officially" a part of Britain

..Kates Cottage down Tholt -y- Will Glen on the Isle of Mann

..Isuzu Trooper full of Rally rescue/Paramedic equipment at full chat down the mountain..

..pull up at the Stage Finish only for a marshal to quip:

"s'cuse me mate... yer brakes are on fire!!"

Has anyone ever driven the Stelvio Pass in Italy - I've heard it's amazing?

The Isle of Man is a part of the British Isles but not the United Kingdom. So when you say Britain!!! Not sure what the correct geography is for Great Britain but the roads here are great, and out of town it really is a case of driving as fast as is safe. Legal too!

Yes, I've done the Stelvio

I remember it before it was fully surfaced and without all the armco!

Lots of the passes are good, once spent a summer holiday "doing" all the alpine passes, only got through 1.5 sets of brake pads

DAve

Is the B660 that bad? I was thinking of having a drive along it tomorrow if the weather is nice.
[edit, just read Matts comments on the other page. Will not be going there then ]

If anybody knows some other good roads near Cambridge could they let me know (via e-mail)

Ta

Mark

Dave,

I only mentioned the B660 because a)EVO talk about it and b)zoog mentioned it. I know the roads round you way are top which is why I didn't mention them

Where *do* you live anyway?

EVO triangle is superb.... but agree it is not what it used to be.

Best times are very early on a Sunday morning (in the summer...)
