Sorry for cross-posting between here and SIDC...only just discovered the Scoob-related forums.
I Have just purchased one of the last of the 02 WRX's I had to talk to someone before I pop....the missus is getting sick of hearing it!
Got a call from the dealer today to tell me my car just came off the transporter and they are expecting my Morette's back from the bodyshop tomorrow, so I should be able to pick up the car on Thursday.
Having owned all sorts of front and rear wheel drive cars, from a classic Datsun 260z to my current Saab 900 Turbo, and having driven allsorts, from a 355 at Goodwood to a single seater at Silverstone, my test-drive experience in the monsoon conditions on a b-road just north of Romford, Essex, was such a revelation that I didn't even bother with the test drive of a Civic Type R I had booked later that day.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I was this excited!
Although I live in London, I grew up in Plymouth, and so I know every inch of Dartmoor like the back of my hand, and so the thought of taking a trip back to my old stomping ground down the A303 / A38 is keeping me awake every night. I keep running over the route again and again in my head.
So....a few newb questions....
Any pointers for the running in period? Just how careful should I be?
Should I switch to fully synthetic after running in?
I've read reviews of the Prodrive Performance Pack for the STi but anyone have it for the WRX? Any thoughts?
Anyone here based around Docklands / East London?
I hear its better to run Super Unleaded even though it reccommends 95RON?
Once again good to me you all, and please excuse me while I get up to speed...

Well thats the second time I've heard that, so I'll go with that unless I hear different
Is yours a brand new car? How is your running in going?

yes, welcome!
make sure you only use super unleaded or optimax. 95 RON aint much good for the car.
if you come down to plymouth, just keep an eye out for speed traps, apart from that its a nice run.
hey, if you want you can even meet some of the local boys while you are down, let me know and i'll arrange something along the lines of moors blast and pub.
have fun mate.

'95RON aint much good for the car'
Imagine it's just recommended by Subaru so they get to do all the warranty work then
No problems with using 95RON but performance/MPG can be improved slightly using a higher octane level...as with all cars not just the WRX

Massive generalisation about the PPP is that you can get the same power for half the price but you will lose your warranty - how much is your warranty worth? If a brand new car, better to keep it. And yes, it does make a difference, the car doesn't run out of breath where it normally does.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Guys (and gals)
Thanks for the warm welcome, and the advice. Much appreciated. I've always been a car lover so most of it is common sense, but it's my first Scooby, and more importantly my first NEW car, so I'm being extra cautious.
T3RBO / Eagle7 I am coming down to visit the folks on the weekend of 30th November if that suits. Do you know the Lee Moor route from Plympton, through the clay pits and then across the moor to Yelverton? I used to thrash my Mk1 Golf around there as a kid and the thought of tackling the same roads in the Impreza is massively exciting. Bear in mind however that I'll still be on my running in period so maybe its better to wait til Xmas, when I'll be down for a week...

Ed,
Welcome
The only things you have to watch for really is the way that you drive your car, they can be quite tail end happy (if you know what i mean ) and you dont really have to provoke them that much for you to notice
Lift off oversteer is the biggest causes of accidents in scoobs (so just take it easy for a while ) and your performance will also feel lacking for a few thousand miles as these engines take a while to run in but you do have a nice solid car that even though it may not be the quickest turbo car out there, does hold its own nicely
My last words for you are these
"less than 6 months and you will be modifying the car in one way or another, be it alloys, brakes or the PPP, its inevitable "
Tony

Yeah I noticed the lift-off on my test drive around a wet roundabout. I'm well-versed in Rwd, so I'm no stranger to oversteer, but I also appreciate that 4wd is different again. I'm quite looking forward to finding the limits and am definitely interested in doing a trackday to play around...
