There's an STi V5 what looks like type-R for sale. The seller is looking for £11850 is that a bit cheap or is it just me. I've only been looking at UK cars but this is tempting (the difference in insurance isn't)

Any opinion?

Fastbloke, No, the one we discussed is a MY99 UK car. I've just seen this one on a website. It's also over in N. Ireland. To be honest I'm expecting the running costs of a Uk car to stretch the old finances so an STi would really cash some havoc to the bank balance but.....£11500 for an V5, would you be tempted?

The UK cars the one I'm genuinely interested in but an STi is a 'real' impreza.

Running costs aren't that much greater for an STI.

As it's in Ireland though, won't you have to pay taxes to bring it over?

You should check that out first - if you've gotta pay VAT and duty, the price will be way higher.

Northern Ireland is classed as UK so as far as I'm aware just put it on a boat and drive her home.

sti 5 type r for circa £11,000 that sounds either seriously dodgy, or just a great price.

No taxes from Northern Ireland - you just need to fill out a form to have registration transferred from Coleraine to Swansea. Scoobs over here are getting really cheap as there are only one or two companies insuring them in NI now. Quotes of 5k + are commonplace if you haven't got a really good postcode and 4000 years NCB. Selling in the UK is loads of hassle as everyone thinks you have stolen it in some other country and that is why you want to meet them in a pub.
Certainly sounds tempting if you can insure it and trace its history

My car came from NI, the only hassle was that the DVLA did classify it as an import and took two days to do the new reg number and change the log book over, they wouldnt have any of the "but its a British car!" either and I think its better to not argue with them, as I have heard of them taking much longer than this. I would def check the car, sounds good!!

Nothings free in this world. Must be some reason... £15k is a steal so id ask myself why hes so keen to get rid. £11500 is cheap but a lot of money to go down the toilet if its a lemon. Has it been crashed????

Where i live some nasty geezers rented a house for a week, put an add for a BMW for 5k cash (worth 10k) and bitch slapped everyone who came round, knowing they had 5k on them. Locked them all up in a back room with one guy and a gun!!!!! Got away with stacks!!!

I'd ask for the full details and check with your local subaru dealer if its one on the list.

Long way to go if its a lemon!!!

I know what you mean. I am suspicious but also tempted, I would never turn up with money. It would have to be a bankers draught.

The seller says he's happy for any inspection. I may throw the question that if there's anything found to be majorly wrong by an AA check then he refunds me the cash, then see what reaction I get.

I'm just thinking out load here but how much does it really cost to buy an STi in Japan then bring it to the UK. Now I know that Importers will price STi's at the same level or higher compared to UK cars due to the higher spec and improved performance but that is just them placing the car at an appropriate price for the UK market (overpriced). If the Seller of this particular STi bought the car and imported it privately and after a few years motoring is happy to take a degree of depreciation compared to his purchase price in order to free up cash for his new EVO7. Then this coupled with his limited number of buyers in N. Ireland compared to the UK could lead to a price, that in comparison to current prices of cars in England appears "Cheap"

for 11k you could probably get a version 3 or possibly a V4 at a push. Not with that low miles though.

if it's white it's more likely as these are worth less (coz thers more of'em).

this is based on a direct import, on a good day (i.e. not many brits around), with a good exchange rate.

Sounds like an absolute steal to me. If he's willing for you to have an inspection then you'd be absolutely mad not to! As long as he can prove it's legit then you're laughin'. It's worth between £15-17K at least..

I imported an STI5 a couple of years ago through STI Imports, who were pretty open about the detailed costs (they largely operated as agents handling the import, rather than buying and importing themselves).

IIRC, the cost of the car in Japan was about £17K, 5% of this was refunded as the car was exported (this was the commission for the guy who bought it and drove it to the docks!) and after tax, VAT, various admin fees and a warranty, the total was about £26K.

I certainly wouldn't be happy to sell mine for £11.5K, so you're probably right to be suspicious. Might be worth checking it hasn't been used as a recce or chase car - lots of tarmac rallying in NI (although not this year because of F&M).

Thats very cheap for a car with low miles on it, id be suspicious though, even 3 yr old uk cars are going for more than that so there must be something wrong with it or like some have said it may be that there isnt the market over in NI at the moment....
But if you want me to point you out a nice MY99 uk car for less than 13k theres one at the local Vauxhall dealers near me, about 50miles from you but if you want more info give me a mail

Just a quick post to let anybody who's interested know. I spoke to the seller on Saturday and he told me his wife was driving the car when she heard a knocking from the engine. The cars in at a local subaru specialist and it's a suspected big end bearing failure.

I said I would call the bloke middle of the week to find out more but I think I've found a UK MY99 (thanks Fast bloke) so if anybody is interested in pursuing this drop me a mail and I'll pass on the info.
