RB5 - R they worth it?
#1
Recently been looking through Top Marques at Subaru Impreza RB5, are these things really worth £20k as this seems to be the ave. price for one on a T Plate!
For £14500 you can get an X plate Impreza turbo for £14,500!
Why are they so expensive as the spec on them is barely any different than a standard turbo?

Yeah they are worth it!
Spec is a lot different to a standard turbo. if you are looking at 20k then you are looking at a wr version which has ppp and a big f*** off prodrive rear wing. For your money you get a special colour, special interior, quick shift, 17" speedlines, big metal bar welded behind the rear seats .
to get a standard uk model with all of this you would be paying thousands and have to declare them all as a mod on the insurance (an rb5 has it a standard)
Why be part of the crowd when you gan be part of the 444???
and yes i have got one

There are considerably less than 444 WR versions around as less than half of the original 444 RB5's made were converted
Yes I've got one as well, and it's on a 'V' plate

I have a RB5 WR, and its great and a little bit more unique on the road. If your interested there were 156 WR models sold out of the 444 RB5's.

Personally, I think teh RB5 is overpriced at 20K.
For that price you are almost in P1 territory - P1s aren't selling too well at the mo.
Also, if you wanted to go for an import, you can get an STI V5 or a V6 at a push - now that is performance !
Good looking car all the same, I'd pay about £15K for a standard RB5 or £17-18K for a WR. after all, you can import a brand new MY02 for £17,000 or drive one away at places like motorpoint for £18000

Sorry, good value for the RB5? Let me elucidate my criticism:
It's basically the MY99 with PPP. Good stuff you also get is the fixed rear seat (2 door is bound to be stiffer though, since it's got 2 less gaping holes in the body), and alcantara interior, plus 17"s.
Bad stuff - what the f---'s the colour got to do with Burnsy? It's about the same colour as his old Mitsu Lancer Evo IV... The logos aren't that exciting either.
The real benefit is the insurance, but if you're going to pay the extra for the car in the first place, when you can easily mod a *blue* MY99 to the same spec for miles less, then you can pay the extra £00s.
Just my ha'porth - inspired by dislike of the colour!

The RB5 is a great looking car, the only UK car in Steel Blue. You get nice 17" wheels that are not gold and are unique to the RB5. Yeah the logo's are a bit tacky but we are buying Jap cars here! Mine is a standard version with a full exhaust mod and I have 258bhp and 235lbs, more than a PPP version! They are worth the money just like a Terzo, Catalunya, etc, as there are only a few hundred of them made.
Go on...Go on...
you know you want to

Don't forget it came top in EVO's 4x4 supertest in 1999. Judged as the best real-world car. It also came 2nd runner up in EVO's COTY - beaten by a 911 Turbo and a Lambo. It's true you can buy an STi for similar money but it's generally agreed that the RB5 is a better package for UK roads - and only group 17/18 insurance. The only way to judge for yourself is to try and get a test drive (try a dealer). The 'over-priced' aspect always gets mentioned but specing a 99MY car to a similar level worked out slightly dearer when I got a quote - and the RB5 has a few unique features.

Maybe that's because people know that there isn't *that* much difference between the two (just shows how overpriced the P1 was originally (IMHO ))

Agreed but the difference in insurance costs is also much bigger!!

Is it worth it???????
+
Well do people buy them for that money??
+
YES THEY DO.
+
So what does that tell you????
=
Yes they are worth it.
There that was simple.......
But I would only buy a WR for that price. Standards you can get for £16,500 to £19,000.

The power output on the RB5 is 237bhp@6000rpm and the torque is 258lb ft@3500rpm compared to the standard turbo which is 215bhp@5600rpm and 214lb ft@4000rpm.
There seem to be quite a few priced around £17,995 on the Topmarques and Autotrader websites but I doubt you will find one any cheaper than that.
Certainly worth the extra money IMO.

There is always loads of confusion over the RB5 power specs. I reckon this is down to magazines printing the wrong figures . Unless the WR Sport pack OR a PPP was fitted at a later date the car should have 215bhp as its a standard UK MY99 phase 2 engine.
Not to sure about insurance grouping but the WR Sport is at least one group higher maybe 2. Depends on the insurance company but I am guessing you are looking at about 17-18 for a standard RB5 and 18-20 for an WR Sport.
If it has had a WR Sport pack fitted (which includes the PPP) or a PPP then it should have a certificate from Prodrive to say this.
Be careful you are not paying for something you havent got ie. higher purchase price + higher insurance. Also Subaru UK would probably be able to tell you if the car has the PPP / WR Sport pack fitted.
As for are they worth it, I looked for one as they are something different but couldnt find one at a "good" price so I went down the new grey route and got a limited edition .
I guess they will keep their price though
cheers

If it is a WR you will find it has a certificate from Prodrive to say so.
Snacks, I probably am biast.... but my comments answered the question of the topic. R they worth it?
Yes they are because people still want and buy them at that price.
That clearly has nothing to do with how good they look.... #
That's my 2p's worth, I'm off

When I got my MY00 I test drove an RB5. It had the standard turbo rear wing, but also had the Prodrive sticker on the back. Dealer reconed that it was a WRSport that the original owner didn't want the high wing. Didn't feel much quicker than my MY00 but did sound much nicer.
No WRSport sticker if I remember correctly...
