I've got a MY01 WRX Wagon. Love it to bits. I went for a wagon because of practicality (I need to be able to fold the seats down - can't do it in the 4 door), its less obvious as to what it is to Joe Public, it attracts less attention from 5-O and potential tw@ts, thieves etc. Downside maybe that it has a narrower track than the 4 door, bit slower, bit more body roll. None of which makes any odds to me.
And seeing as they're 3 grand cheaper....

only difference in performance is about 2mph top end for a 5 door and i think there is some advantage on stiffness for the 5 door
Guess what i drive
Although at the mo its in bits at Beechdale having new bits in the gear box

I have the 5door MY01 WRX - its the only car that can fit 3 mountain bikes inside (my business) but can also tear round the track with the best of them.
Although, people do look at me funny turning up to track days with a car 5x the size & weight of a caterham.
When I bought the MY01 - I was faced with the same problem - heavily discounted 'old' shapes against the more expensive new shape. If you intend to keep your car for a while - say 3 years, then get the discounted one. If you get through cars, then get the newer one - although, i didn't reckon that this shape would only last 18 months before being changed. ah well.
