Insurance related again.

My policy is up for renewal...its a new car this time instead of a two year old car. Last year it cost us £650 (ish) from Norwich Union Club to insure the following via Keith Michaels:

MY97 Impreza Turbo 5 Door
SS Backbox
SS Downpipe
K&N 57i induction kit
Laserline CAT1 Alarm and Immob.

Insured for SDP and business use.
Track Day cover included
Last insured value was £18500

Driver Details

My Woman (Main driver)
DOB 27/02/1960
No claims or convictions
Full protected no claims
We are classed as comon law as we've been together for 8 years.

Me:
DOB 22/05/1973 (spot the age difference )
No claims or convictions
3 years no claims

Postcode is good area
Car garaged overnight

Both have access to other Cars (97' Punto GT Turbo, Old Mini city)

The new car

MY00 Impreza Turbo 4 door
ScoobySport backbox,centre/mid section and Downpipe
Ramair filter panel
OZ Super Ts 17" in gold
Subaru CAT1 Immob and Alarm.

Insured Value is £22,500

SDP and Business Use
Track Day cover required

Keith Michaels (0208 2397188) £1048.15
this is NU Club policy again - £50 a time for trackday cover

OPI (0870 2420800) £975 including no extra cost for trackday cover (Again NU Club)

Greenlight (01277 263030) £976 plus £50 per track day. (NU Club)

Bell Direct (0800 567568) no cover - too many modifications ?

Hastings Direct (0990 730133) £728 - no trackday cover permitted - wheels added an additional £100 to the premium as they are classed as a higher risk than the exhaust system ?

QuoteLine (0990 143424) - £906 - won't touch trackdays with a bargepole

What the hell is going on ????

It seems my nippy little AWD beast has become expensive to insure all of a suddden.

Can some of you say what it cost you to insure similar cars ?

Cheers (not a happy bunny today)

Ian

sheeeesh - you lot! It IS a performance car and HAS become very nickable as you well know!
My best was £1750 through OPI with trackday cover for an MY99 STI-V TypeR with Blitz catback exhaust system. Me: 23, 2 years ncb, car on driveway overnight, one SP30, director, only driver.
Just before I sold the Scoobs i was told by OPI that my car had gone from group 18 to group 20 so the next renewal would have probably been worse!

Ours came through at £880 with Norwich Union that's full no claims and over ** with one other driver - again full no claims - car garaged at night - excuse- it's an Import. And this was £200 up on last year - same car!

Did manage to get it down to £768 though because we have another car insured with Norwich Union...

MX-5 - also an import - fully comp - full no claims £340.???

In my book - a more dangerous car to be in because of it's size and vulnerability...

It is a mystery to me how they set the criteria for vehicles -

but IMHO Impreza Turbos are falling into the gap left by 205 GTI's as was a few years ago... highly sought after - vulnerable and prone to theft - and dare I say it 'boy racer' because you have to admit this is beginning to happen.

It may be worthwhile increasing your excess. I was getting quotes around the same (me&wife, 7 years NCB, Leeds postcode, MY00 unmodified) which came down to 655 quid when I increased the excess to 350 quid.

Premium search were *excellent*, and insured my UK car on chassis number only, including transport whilst in Holland (imported car from there). Try 'em on 0800 10 9 8 7 6

Try Privilige - I just renewed for £605 (MY98 Turbo 4 Door, some brake mods, fully comp, track days included, parked on drive, Cat 1 alarm). I'm 31 with 5 years NCB. Haven't got a SS back box, but apparently they'll cover these at no extra cost.

Ive always used Cheam Insurance Brokers who do the shopping round for me - generally v good. Definitely worth increasing your excess if you dont think you're going to crash.

Am not going to post my insurance costs on here...just too scary Im afraid!

Yes I did spot the age difference. I was going to suggest maybe you could put her down as a named driver as your mother which would bring down the insurance a bit more - but then your not married.... and I would probably get a slap.

For a 29 year old, 6 points (sp50, sp30) 2 years NCB, 1 claim in '98, garaged and rural location........£1340 and £1000 XS......this was the lowest i could get! from Keith Micheals, could anyone with a similar situation and a better deal let me know!!!

Cool

I got Norwich Union Club Insurance through Bennetts Elite (0990 202090) for my Legacy RS twin turbo (280PS) for £559 - car valued at £18000. Full NCD, self + wife, £150 excess, car parked in drive, safe post code area.

Really efficient at taking the money, but it took ten weeks to get the policy documents - told that Norwich Union had a backlog and that it takes longer to process an import.

Depending on your broker it would appear that Norwich Union are quite good

I'm bad, really bad with 14 points all collected via SP this and SP that before my Scoob arrived! Still has slowed me down some, can't afford any more mistakes, wouldn't be able to drive my beloved Scoob anymore!

My stats are as follows:

`94 WRX valued @ £15K
14 pts
3 yrs NCD
£250 XS (I think)
Premium is £1150 with NU. Not bad considering!

James Adlington,

I'm with privilage. You say they didn't charge any extra on the premium for the SS Back box, cause I'm thinking of getting one.

My premium is just over £1400 already because of my age and I can't afford any increases.

To cut a long story short, is that 100% deffinate regarding the SS back box no extra cost.

Cheers Folks...thanks for the support. It seems I'm not that bad off compared to some of you young'uns

Fullonloon,
be careful what you say...its not me you have to watch...its my woman...shes been known to give out a good slap or two in the past ...just you hope shes too lazy to be at Donno in march or you're in trouble

Penni,
you are correct about the fast car/insurance premium-taking-the-pi$$ factor. it seems that cossies have either been crashed or insured by true enthusiasts these days (like our friend Mr. Mike Rainbow)...dirty criminal gits like to use our cars as geta-way vehicles...

I like to class my de-catted exhaust as an anti-car criminal device. If some dirty little $hit tries to start my car the entire street (no...in fact...all the surrounding streets would know about it).

I think I'll have to take it on the chin like a man (all be it crying into my hands) and cough up the dosh

IDRIS - I got the info on the SSBB from someone else who was insured with Privilege (usual scooby owners conversation - start with what you've done to your car, then move on to how much you insurance co. screws you for them ). Best thing to do is to give Privilege a ring - they do seem to know what they're talking about so you should be able to get a definite answer quickly.

Is there a list anywhere in "cyber-scooby" land of which insurance companies are modification/trackday friendly?

For the record I just called AXA-Direct and they won't touch a Scooby with a Scoobysport backbox!
Interestingly, it turns out that AXA-Direct is infact the same company as Guardian Direct, and has taken over Guardian's Insurance rules.
Howevere, AXA itself has a different set of rules!

Confused? Join the club

Noticed that you have a MY00 with a complete SS system fitted. How did you get on with Subaru about changing the complete system? Is your warrany on the engine still intact?
Please let me know – ray@ootb.co.uk

Anyway my car MY00 4 door Turbo garaged overnight, fitted with tracking device. SD&P use as well as commuting to and from work. TGI panel filtre, SS centre & back box. I'm 35, full protected no claims, Hemel Hempstead address £650 with Admiral!

my99 value 23,500 scooby back box
4years ncb fully comp
36 years old
rural location garaged

500.00
National Farmers Union
nfu-mutual.co.uk

most policies are new for old in the first year, this is new for old first 2 years. !
Not sure how they would go for track days etc but for general use the policy is superb.

Also outstanding prices on house etc.

No commission honest. !

Some more fun Insurance story,

I'm Dutch, worked in Aberdeen for 2 years and had during that period an RHD Escort RS Turbo, reregistered in the UK, coming from the Netherlands where I bought it for DFL 5500 with 40000 miles on it. (Instead of running my legacy which I had to do some major mods on, that one stayed at home.
40 years old, no convictions, no points, car was perfect, estimated af 2500 - 3500 GBP value, class II alarm. First year insurance cost, for full cover GBP 550. Next year I got a 'quote' for renewal, at GBP 1600+, still no convictions and no points. Upon my question why, they did tell me the car was stolen a lot. (I used to live in Stonehaven, never seen looked upon that as boy racer / joyriding capital of the UK). Needless to say the car was insured 3rd party. In Holland you just keep paying from year to year to year the same, depending upon incidents and no-claims build up. I think you guys in the UK should start pressing for an official investigation into insurance scams..........by insurance companies. Just like with car prices a few years ago.

Regards,

Govert.

the words hurt, that, ouch come in to it but shes worth it (valued at 18k, euro import with added goodies ) MY00 turbo

MY95 mods:
17", full ss inc dp, chip, uprated brakes, eibach's, prodrive interior. Approx 280bhp (I hope, find out tomorrow)

cat 1 + tracker, I just been told by Tesco that I need one now, currently with barclays
Garaged overnight.

35yo, 7yrs no claims, no bumps/accidents ever ...BUT 6 month ban 2 years ago & 2 x sp 50 from 1-2 years ago
wife - 1 x sp 30

quoted £1577 with £1000 excess

fairly pleased considering all the mods & points, will be interesting to see what Barclays quote. Trying Schofields, I have heard they are very good as one of the guys owns a modded scooby.
