Just as i was saying, mines not due for another 9 month or so but its a bit of a faf and a lot of cash to get the turbo cat put back on for the sake of the mot when they know your just going to de-cat it again after its passed.

Anyone got away with the full de-cat on a uk car when mot-ing?

Thanks
Simon

What i write now is purely for reference only
If you take the old cat pipe with you and keep it in the boot. there are a lot of MOT stations that will assist if you know what i mean

I have passed with the cat in the boot and most garages are quite happy with that as they know the score. Also some garages like www.subaru4you.co.uk will loan you a double catted centre pipe for the mot and charge something like £30 for the piece of mind of a guaranteed pass.
The smaller family type garages are the best ones to go for if you opt for the "boot" option....

Just had my catless STi4 MOT'd...subaru4you fitted their double cat centre section & it got through the MOT (only just though)
Had it back to catless an hour after the MOT.
With the pipe fitted & the aircon on it felt like I was carrying about 5 pasengers - still easy to see off the odd GTi though !

as a tester i'd agree there are "understanding" garages out there but beware when the computerisation of mots takes off it will be a lot harder to be understanding as the emmission test results will be fed into the test computer at the time of test. this data along with how long the mot took etc will be available to the vehicle inspectorate instantly, to the extent that they can sit around the corner and monitor a test station vie a mobile and lap top and then arrive and ask to examine the vehilce you are in the middle of making out the pass. this should stop "postal" mot's and dodgy trade mots but it will make it harder to avoid problems wth de catted exhausts. of course garages can make mistakes and it possible they might put the probe up the exhaust of the wrong car but god help them if they get spotted.

when i get the chance i'll put together a full posting on emmission limits including scans of the relevant pages from the manuals. beware though since the basic emmission test came in subaru does not appear to differenciate between imports and uk models unlike most Jap manufacturers who specify engine/ model codes. as a rsult in theory imports have to match the uk model limits.

hypothetically you could wonder if this was another example of a manufacturer being stroppy witht hose that own imports

i was under the impression that they had to keep the print out of the emissions test anyway?

yep for 3 months

but they can get "lost"

also they might not get done at the tine the car is tested but, purely by coincidence, get done when another car is there

that will all change with the computerisation

can't you get fined by the police if your cars supposed to have a cat and its been removed? Would think that scoobies would be another easy source of income for them as they will be fully aware of whats going on

You can defer a roadside emmissions test - thats your legal right.
So that would give you enough time to fit a cat.

thing that would worry me though is the fact that your car is not road legal so in the event of a nasty prang etc your insurance would be null and void.

Just put my my93 wrx through the MOT today, its got no cats in it, just fitted the decat d/p two weeks ago so its still shiny. went through without any problems

Examiner asked if its got any cats on it, "no" i replied innocently.

no problem, emmissions were well low as well

co55ie, don't be daft mate, what do you think happens to all those cars who have accidents and are not taxed, they still pay out.
Mine was written off with a full decat and I made sure they paid for a replacement decat system when they paid out, which they did no probs
