The problem will solve itself IMHO, a badly maintained car/ badly tuned/ running on NUL then it will blow and cost a fortune to repair. Trust me the impreza will get a huge reputation of blowing up due to over tuned and badly serviced cars and then we are all stuffed . All the boy racers think all imprezas have 350bhp and putting a 5" backbox on gives them serious horsepower. I just ask what model ECU they are running, what turbo, what boost pressure, size of the injectors, TMIC or FMIC, normally lost them by then and blank faces appear . Its not what you know its knowing how to out con them .

I agree as well. I'm 23, I pay quite a lot for insurance, but it's the only (realistic ) car I've wanted for at least 4 years. Now I have owned one for just over 6 months. I wouldn't want to change it (except for a 22B, P1 or RB5 maybe )
For the record, this is the second car I've owned. I kept an E reg Pug 309 on the road for 5 years (and got some NCB)
Yes, it is serviced regularly. No it's not at a main dealer (as I have never believed in paying for things I can learn to do myself - like changing oil, plugs etc.)
OK, so sometimes I have to scrimp and save to get parts (dodgy driving lamps - they work, but aren't PIAAs or Cibies... and no replacement front splitter yet) However, the engine & running gear is not neglected. OK, the car's not perfect, but it's 6 years old, and parts are beginning to wear out. They get replaced as soon as possible (usually with better parts )
Yes, I'm young, no, I don't have a fortune to spend on the car, but I consider myself an enthusiast and I enjoy the car. (and I try not to drive like a prat) What more would I do if I were older then?
And as for "young people want to drive fast" yes, it may be true in some (maybe most) cases, but also true is "some older people want to drive fast too"

When I did get my first WRX RA I did get some funny comments after previous cars (911, GT4 WRC, etc...). The most amusing was a couple people said "That's not like you buying a sensible family car".
It was nice when no-one knew what they were. The fact it pi55ed on anything I had previously had by a country mile was lost on them.
On a sadder note a girl of 16 at home (we can drive from 15) was bought a WRX by her rich parents as they saw it as a safe car. Her and three friends were dead within the week.
There is something to be said when you do work for a car. You are more likely to be an enthusiast.
With great power comes great responsibility.

Well, I'm in a bad mood this morning.....
Right, there have been a number of threads recently about young kids driving impreza's like **** and how they shouldn't be allowed to drive any impreza until they've done this that and the other. On this topic I'd like to make my pennies worth known.
I'm 23, I wanted an impreza since I can remember, and when one comes along at less than 7K I buy it. So there. Consider this: what was the car you wanted most when you we 16, 17 or 18, then consider what you'd do if you could suddenly afford that car. So, the first point is, you'd be an idiot not to buy it. Impreza drivers should be complemented on the fact that most think its a cool car, consequently loads of people want one.
I have to pay LOTS of money to maintain the prevalage of owning my car, insurance (YES, I HAVE INSURANCE), servicing (YES, I SERVICE MY CAR, PROPERLY), fuel (YES, I USE OPTIMAX ETC). For me, this shows that I'm not just some spotty oik running around in a fast car, I am an enthusiast and am always looking at and learning about the car. Just because I'm younger doesn't mean I can;t appreciate stuff.
Do I drive like a ***? Well, occasionally yes. But so does everyone else, in fact everyone else drives like a *** more than I do IMO. I try and drive with the fact that I've got this car that can get you in trouble, I drive it alot more sensibly than I drove my last car.
The ******* stupid stuff I see on the roads is unbelievable. When I first passed my test (6 years ago) the general road user drove with respect for everyone else. Nowadays it seems that most people have given themselves the licence to drive everywhere like some crazed idiot with a ferret up their ****. When was the last time you drove to work and didn't see someone, at some point, break a road traffic law?
That brings me on to my next point; when I'm asked by people what car I drive, I sometimes feel that telling them I drive an impreza is setting myself up for a load of abuse. This is why: (IMO). when people are out driving, they see cars, lots of cars, fords, vauxhalls, volvos, BMW's, Mercs. They don't notice these. The impreza is a car that people notice, an Evo is a car that people notice, a 911 is a car that people notice. So, you drive a car like that, people are going to be extra critical on how you drive, all you need to do is something slightly questionable, and if someone spots you they'll dine out on the "impreza drivers are cuhts" story for years. How many people driving some run of the mill car will do something stupid? Well, ******* loads, but they don't drive an impreza, so they go un-noticed. Plus, there are lot more vectras, mondeos etc then there are impreza, so statistically they are going to be worse anyway, and ARE. I find that one of the aforemention cars will tailgate me, then pull some stupid *** type cutting up thing just to prove a point.
I hope that some people are not getting annoyed simply because their pride and joy is loosing some of its exclusivity. [screaming child mode]Lashing out at the young is not fair[\screaming child mode]. Get over it. I know a few impreza owners my age (and I know loads of people on sn are as well), and AFAIK we are all in the same kind of boat. Fair enough, there will be some 18 year old somewhere driving an impreza like an ****, but I bet for everyone of them there is someone "of respectable age" driving around like an **** as well!
Anyway, I'll step down now, have a chill pill etc, and make my last point that; there are always exceptions to every rule
I thank yoo.

Seconded!
Do not see many threads about a Scoob being driven well, condsiderately and within the law, only bad examples ever get publisised.

Well said. I bought my (dearly missed) Impreza at the age of 24 so I can totally emapthise with you.
Anyway, it's quite obvious that driving an Impreza like a complete *** isn't the preserve of the young .. as was witnessed on Sunday's Northern Meet.

The car I wanted most was a 911. Folks reckon I came out of the womb screaming for one.
Got one when I was still 19.
Had a highly tuned RA and my wife, under 25, loved driving it. And it made her a bloody good driver. Got to the point where she refused to drive less than 300hp. And she isn't a big lass So what's that say. Young female driver.
There are loads of older people who can't drive for ****e but the danger there is they think they can. It doesn't matter how old or young you are. There is still a good chane you drive like a ****.
This is what freedom is all about. Let's all drive around in black Micras playing the same tune on the radio.
29 and on my 30th car and just bought an EVO 6. And I'll drive it however the **** I want as long as no-one else is put at risk.

I understand your frustration, and you're right.
Having said that, nobody has suggested that all younger drivers are bad, and all older ones are good. That's far from the case.
I think the point one or two are trying to make, and I might be wrong, is that older Imprezas are becoming affordable for the less than responsible younger drivers. The types who have created that stereotypical baseball cap wearing Max power image associated (rightly or wrongly) with the morons on our roads.
Good luck to you if you've managed to get something you've aspired to at such a relatively young age, it's more than I managed.

Younger people are an easier target for blame really. But the point you made is spot on.
Im 22 , basically i have wanted a subaru for a good few years. I have and am still working hard and saving my money to buy the car. Hopefully next month. I have gained a good no claims bonus and im willing to pay that little bit more for the pleasures of driving a subaru. Since i have joined this forum , its like being back at school... i have learnt so much already and ive not even started but i look forward to learning everything , one good thing about this board though is the maturity of it , everyone is helpful here (unlike other boards i have been on) and i do look forward to meeting people from the board once i have my subaru.
When i do buy this car , i am going to treat this car like a child.
If some k*ob in whatever car decides to want a go, then obviously they have some sort problem. Like countless people have mentioned though , other drivers do try and have a go with you basically because they want to see the car do what it was supposed to do.
If people do rise to the occasion , they know what they are doing and obvisouly accept any consequences.
Sorry for the long post.

well said M8.
I'm 50 and i can only say im jelous that cars such as these were not around when i was 24/25.Then it was mark 2 escort mexico's and they were way out of my price range.
Its a free country if you have the cash you can buy the car. There is nothing anyone can do about that.
All marques have idoits whether its the souped up nova brigade with big exhausts and hats on backwards doing wheelies round a roundabout near goole,(Goolies??) or the bmw drivers (nuff said)
As for reputation if some scooby owners are not careful they are going to generate another sort of "snobby/cliquey" image. There were already comments in auto express about "sensitive scooby owners" wanting to race the test drivers of the ford rs focus in scotland.
If you have a scoob be proud of it.We should be a wide church and try and get the so called "******** " to subscribe to scoobynet then they might learn something.indeed we all might.

I see your point.
Most young drivers want to go fast, fact. Young drivers cant normally afford your BMW M3 or Porker 911 - so what to do??? - get a car thats just as quick for a fraction of the cost, and the Impreza now falls into that catagory. The Impreza will be the first fast car that many young drivers will own, so unfortuantly its going to get a bad rep on occasions. Anyone who says that a group of drivers are ***** because of the car they drive is an uneducated fool.
I find it rediculous that people can relate bad driving to a particular brand or model of car, put that driver in any car and he/she will drive badly. Dont be embarresed to admit you drive a Scooby, if someone judges you on that then do you really want to be talking to these dicks?
I drive an M3 and have had BMWs for the last 5 years so I now about people branding you for the car you drive, and I have become an expert in dealing with these people.
Iam 25 and I still get the young driver thing!!

dosenöffner - I think you hit the nail on the head.
It seems that how much work and hardship you go through to get what you want that determines how you look after it.

when i was at a Scooby meet at a show up in norwich.
my wife said to me:
'i just heard this woman telling her son 'oh this is the boy racers bit' [pointing her finger over various scoobys]
so I turned round and said to her 'BOY RACERS!!! DO U THINK BOY RACERS COULD AFFORD ONE OF THESE CARS'
she said the woman shut up, kinda looked deep in thought, nodded (as if to agree) and walked off.
when she told me this I just pissed myself laughing.
this sums it up for me

bought MY01 UK300 when I just turned 24, and I am branded as a "BOY RACER". How many 24 yr old boyracers do you know that drives a brand spanking new limited edition Scoob????
Yes I drive it hard at times, but no matter what cars people own, they will usually drive it as hard as they can at some point. There is no point driving like an idiot, as it will only cost me the car I have worked long and hard for.
Off my high horse now.

bought the 22B at 22.
Insurance was a fantastic £1200 which I was happy to pay.
Didnt give any consideration to anyone else saying I was a young boy racer because I never saw it.
The car is so loud anyway, anyone of any age drivign it will be branded a boy racer.
I simply dont care.
Certainly am not a nut case driver, if anythign I am the focus of all my friends jokes (most serious performance car owners) for driving like a chauffeur all the time!

just seen this thread,
i'd like to say well said Dan B, i totally agree with you.
Ive had my MY98 impreza turbo for 15 months now. i was 27 when i bought it and to be honest if i was as enthusiastic over imprezas at 22 as i am now i would have definitely bought one then. and to be honest i wouldnt have given a to55 what other people thought.

Damn right mate, been interested in nice cars since I was in primary school, back then it was the Sapphy Cossie I thought was the dogs bollocks cos you got supercar performance in a car that I could realistically imagine my parents buying if I convinced them enough (unlike Porkers, Ferraris etc). With the death of the Cossie in the 90s the Scoob rose from the ashes to become (to me) the spiritual successor of a supercar which is just about affordable to my humble self.
Now at 23 I've realised my dream car and although I like to have some fun in it (no-one buys a 200+ BHP car to drive it like a learner) I've got too much to lose if I crash it which means I give the car a lot of respect. On the road I drive well within my limits, keep it easy around town and give it a bit of stick on empty back roads without taking it right to the edge. A lot of that restraint is down to the AWD setup which although is excellent, causes the car to react very differently under power to the FWD car I've been driving for the last 6 years.
Yes, we will be stereotyped as I've no doubt I am in my local area but everyone is stereotyped no matter what (older drivers in Imprezas are often labelled farmers etc...). So who cares, as long as the car keeps giving me the satisfaction it does at present I'm happy with it

I bought my first scooby at the age of 21 for the grand sum of £11,900.00 (MY96 with 36K on the clock). I'm no daddies rich kid and bought the car with my own money - and I was earning **** then, about 10.5K. I'd managed to save up 9K towards it and borrowed another 4.5K for the rest and insurance.
Any sensible parent shouldn't let a 17/18 year old jump straight into a high performance car, it will nearly always end in disaster and I speak from experience of people I know.
Best bet is to start in a ****ter, and progressively work your way up. I started in a 1.0L renault 5 (although it was a turbo replica , then my mums Rover 214 16v, then a 1.7 renault 5 GTX, then my clio 16v, then my scoob, now my bug eye.
Like most on here I cherish my cars (even that renault 5). I made a lot of sacrifices to buy my cars, insure them and run them. Rather than spunking £100+ on a night up town like most of my mates or going on the razz to Ibiza I saved for the scoob and had no regrets.
Not all young drivers with nice cars can be tarred with the same brush although I think those like myself and others on here are vastly in the majority.
Just my 2cents worth.
Chris

Not all young drivers with nice cars can be tarred with the same brush although I think those like myself and others on here are vastly in the majority.
Just my 2cents worth.
