Speak to Rich Wild, he runs an MY96, it has a few mods (brakes etc) but pretty powerful with only minor mods (no real engine mods, just breating mods mainly with some other bits )
Last time he had his car on the rollers it was pushing around 344bhp and running reliably

U kidding? by my simple maths, thats a gain of 136bhp. Did you not mean 244bhp?

I think Rich's car was last verified at 331hp

Don't see the point of sayig there are no internal mods, they don't make it more powerful, just stop it grenading due to the "breathing" mods.

I have a MY94 WRX Wagon, and it's 'slightly' modded. full spec is:

Car Details
Car: 1994 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon
Jap Import: Yes
Modified: Yes (see below)

Modifications
Engine and exhaust
Forge vent to atmosphere dump valve
HKS Super Power Flow (Green Mushroom) induction kit
BPM Twindump downpipe
Blitz Nur Spec R (center section and backbox)

Wheels, Brakes and Suspension
Movit 4m6 front brake kit (calipers and pads from Porsche 911 GT3, discs from latest generation 911 turbo)
Powerstation Bumpsteer Modification
Whiteline Automotive fron Anti-lift kit
Cusco/STi competition front strut brace
Cusco Power Brake Support Bracket
MY01 17 inch wheels
Bridgestone Potenza Damper for Street Limited Edition loweered suspension

Exterior
Morette Quad headlamp conversion
2 mini bonnet scoops (by Stuart Knight)

OK so not ALL of the things listed are performance mods. But does prove it's modded.

Apart from a new clutch, and prob a new power steering pump (under investigation), plus a little overboost (cleaning the boost soleniod soonish) it's a good runner.

I run it on optimax, or Super (cos of the full decat) and it's great. OK, bodywork wise it's been in the wars a bit, but this does not effect performance, which is what you're asking about.

If you are worried about modding an early car then get a good garage to give it a very thourough once over to make sure all is well, then think about what you want to do, and prob talk to the same garage, they might advise against some things in favor of others. For example, don't just get a boost controller and whack the boost up to 2bar, it'll prob go BANG!

If you want to know who's done what, and is it any good, then post on here.

There are a number of early cars about with high mileages (mine has 107,000miles there are some with 150k and 200k) and still going strong touch wood.. although mine it pretty much standard it pulls like a train still.. has an STi exhaust and ITG panel filter so not really power gaining mods.

The TD05 turbo as fitted to the early cars makes increasing power easy as Rich Wilds car demonstrates as it is a fairly large turbo although laggy..

I think as long as the mods are sensible it should be reliable.
Second had engines are about 1k so if it all goes wrong not to much to fix.. if you sell of the bits secondhand on here etc..

Rich spent less than 2k on his "breathing mods" you would be best asking him about it but i think he got most of his stuff from Jap Innovations in Oldham.

I bought a MY96 UK Turbo last year. It has Prodrive suspension, back box and an ITG filter, so not many mods. Hand on heart I can not say the car is reliable and it only had 25K when I brought it.
If young girls didn't offer to suck my bits then I would have sold it a long time ago.
