Smelly Scoob
#1
Just been for my hols in Devon and had a bit of fun going up and down single track lanes with occasional steep bits. So happened that at one of the steeper bits, I encountered a car coming the other way and I reversed a few yards back up the hill to a passing place. The clutch gave out the most horrendous pong, of sweaty cheesy feet. Quite odd. Is that the normal smell for a Scoob clutch? Mine's a UK MY99 - standard clutch as far as I know, although it's had a warranty replacement one.
Not particularly worried about it - in fact, quite pleased because I've smelt the subtle waft before and just thought it was the footwell vents blowing across my shoes...
Muppetise or stick in Drivetrain if you want, Messrs Moderators.

Hi,
You must have burnt the clutch slightly by slipping it too much...
It is easy to do on a UK car because reverse is too tall a ration IMHO. Maybe the Japanese imports are better with their lower final drive.
Don't worry though - you've probably not damaged anything.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi
my car is the very same...
my99, replaced clutch.
Can usually smell the cheesy feet smell slightly.
Also smells bad when using reverse or 1st and 2nd alot.
never hashing it.
my clutch judders a fair bit too... not quite like it used to.. but is getting worse.
think ill just wait till it goes, and get an AP one.

Maybe there's a market for nicer smelling clutch plates? Chocolate or something. Mind you, making them smell probably oughtn't to be encouraged.
At least I know cheesy feet is normal and won't blame my stepson-to-be any more (whose feet smell worse than a Scoob clutch).
Not concerned about having damaged it - it works perfectly well. Intrigued about reverse being too high a ratio - I've not checked the specs, but reverse is usually just slightly lower than 1st, I believe. Is the Jap-spec different, or are you talking about the RA short ratio gearbox Alex?

Get exactly the same in my MY01* when I reverse into my drive. There's a short, steep ramp over the curb (waiting for the road to be surfaced) which you have to give it quite a few revs for.
Simon
*Actually, they call it MY02 here in Canada. How the hell can that be? Am I driving a blue print?

Hi,
Not totally sure about reverse being a higher ration than 1st, but it is overgeared unless you feel the need to do 45 in reverse on a frequent basis!.
Maybe people complain about burning the clutch in reverse because they ride it more when maneuvering then you normally would in other gears, especially when reversing up slopes.
Cheers,
Alex
