How do you check out a Jap Import?
#1
My STI is undergoing minor front end surgery at the moment. I had a call from the bodyworks yesterday saying that the insurance inspector had stopped them working on the car as he hadn't realised it was an import (well they did when they charged me 2K to insure the thing )
So, check out the BBC watchdog site which says;
You will need to take your car to the appropriate local dealer along with the V5 registration document, and for a fee of £25 they'll check your car's VIN number against their database in Japan.
To find your local dealer, Watchdog has provided a list of links to dealer locators throughout the UK. By entering your postcode, these will inform you where your local dealer is:
LIST OF LINKS TO DEALER LOCATORS...
Well thats nads. My two local dealers say sod off we can't have anything to do with you its an import. Speak to SUK who say the same.
Spoke to the local police who know chuff all and tell me to call Subaru UK.
If anyone knows what I should do please let me know as I'm getting a bit miffed at the whole thing.
Cheers
Andy

Get them to call KT Greens Subaru of Leeds as they are running a check on mine and had a form from IM to fill in and e-mail to them in Japan (Still waiting for the verdict though ) They had also been told to charge 30 mins labour for it (It took about 20 so not bad really)

Andy,
STi's are only available as an import so the insurance company must know it's an import.
Also, check the VIN what for. If it is stolen it's nothing to do with your insurers fixing it after a prang. If it is a stolen car and during the course of it's repairs the Japanese insurers step in fiar enough.
But an insurance company can't stop repairs on the basis that your car might once have been stolen with NO evidence to prove this.
More cars are stolen in the UK eanch month they in a year in Japan.
By this reckoning, every car insured could have to be checked wether it's UK or not on the basis it may be stolen.
Speak to your insurers then speak to CAB it's bollox.

Andy,
A very strange response from your local dealer and SUK/IM. Totally the opposite of my experience!
On a previous thread I wrote:
I just contacted my local Subaru dealer (Town & County, Perth, Scotland). They are aware of this check, and are perfectly willing to take part in this scheme. I was told that IM sent a message to all UK dealers yesterday explaining the situation and asking that they all cooperate with these checks. Oh, and their was a PS on the message saying "we still won't service, sell, etc grey imports"!!!
