Hi all,

This is my first post on the famous Scoobynet forum, so a big Hi to all.

For finance reasons I have had to sell my Honda S2000 which was much loved and a real wrench to let go, I have been told however that I will be much better off with a small, economical run around car. Obviously that just is not going to happen!, I need BHP!!! and so for 5-6K I am looking at getting one of these mean machines.

Does anyone have any advice from the heady heights of 9000rpm to the torque busting Scooby?

I am looking to purchase in a few weeks and the Impreza Turbo 2.0 is high on my list. I understand the WRX is an import and hits you on the insurance but seeing as how I was group 20 anyway I cannot see this being a problem.

So any good websites giving model pictures (ideally 94-96) would be great. Anything I should look out for on certain models? i.e. is high mileage a problem? etc.

What can I get for 5-6K would also be a good question I suppose!

thx for reading

A.

Hi

www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm

For 6K you would be looking at a 94-95 WRX... dont know about a UK car, it would probably be high milage for 6K...

If you are use to an S2000 you will find everything starts about 5000rpm earlier . The 6k area you are in the danger zone IMHO. Plenty of thrashed and bashed about, just take your time and make sure it has a fully service history (should have been serviced every 6 months or 7,500 which every is sooner) best with a known specialist not Joe's back street garage . Aviods the ones "its been chipped and it 320bhp" if it has and done by simply upping the boost or fooling the ECU it will be expensive to rebuild the engine.

Expensive items, engine, turbo, gearbox, clutch, brakes and tyres should be swapped in 4s. You should run on SUL/Optimax as a minimum and ideally run with octane booster as well.

Before you buy, look into the servicing costs. Dunno what Honda charge, but a scoob main dealer will charge around £140 for a very basic service. Major service is between £400 and £500 depending where you go and if it's a cambelt job or not.
Expect 18-20 mpg average. If you buy one you'll not be able to keep it standard for long, trust me!

picture: I wouldn't worry too much about higher mileage cars.
These cars seem to either blow their engines in the first 30-40K miles or last forever. Personally I'd feel safer in a car with 60K miles on it than a one with 10K.
Try and ensure the car has been well serviced and fed the right fuel and you should be ok.

Thx for all the great responses.

The S2000 has about 240BHP, however you do need to get to its power band of +6000rpm and max 240bhp is at 8,300rpm!. Everybody thinks you are racing them when really you are just progressing, it is a racing car at heart.

What impreza has 280bhp as standard? What is the 0-60 of the Turbo? I know this is very general but I have very little knowledge of these cars and I'd like to see what I can get for the money (assuming I do my homework and dont buy a lemon!)

thx
A.

Interesting......

My Mrs' Civic type R eats them, it's got a full H&S system with sports cat and remoulded manifold, and blitz cold air induction kit !! 258 BHP at 7900 RMP !!!

Mind you my scoob is always out in front but I fear not for long, will have to start limiting her funding !!

What impreza has 280bhp as standard?
280PS which is 276bhp

Japanese Imports :

MY97 STI (4 and 5doors), WRX (4door only)
MY98 22B
MY98-00 all STI and all WRX (except auto boxes)
MY01 STI only
MY02 STI only

UK cars:

22B type Uk
P1

What is the 0-60 of the Turbo?
Magazine tests :

208/215bhp UK turbo classics between 5.0 and 5.5

Classic imports between 4.1 and 5.5

New shapes are a bit slower as they are heavier with the same power.

Cheers

Chris
