I would'nt take my ECU on holiday. What if it got lost, frazzled by the x ray scanners etc. If you do want to got the remove bits from your car route put em in secure storage at the airport and pick them up when you get back.
If you can, take a cab instead.

what about the fact that an ecu looks a bit like a detonator circuit for a bomb!
Did no one think about that?
I was joking about removing the ecu. If you had a link you could set the rev limit to 100 rpm, and then they could never take it.
personally for the agro I would just get a cab!

I cant take a cab as I would mean the scooby will be left at the side of a busy road, the garage is being used for something else.
I normaly take a cab or the wife's car & lock the scooby in the garage.

How do you know what a detonator circuit for a bomb looks like? Did I see you in Ealing last week in a Grey Saab?

Hi,
I will be leaving my car at Gatwick Airport this coming weekend for a week,
its a 1993 WRX non Stolen Jap Import.
I have the Clifford Cat 1 alarm immobiliser system & a steering wheel
locking job, what else can I do to make sure the car is there when I return.
I need it quick, simple etc, a part I can pull off and stick in my bag for
example, I would remove the battery but that stops the alarm.
I was thinking about backing in to the parking bay and removing the rear
number plate & letting they tyres down, not flat but enough to make it
undriveable, but would people think its dumped etc and then smash it up??
Cheers in advance

Letting your tyres down might not do them any good, and the last thing you need is someone thinking it's dumped (car park owners included, they might tow it away . The car park will be under CCTV but the owners wont be repsonsible should anything happen to your motor. If you don't wash it for a few weeks beforehand so it's covered in **** that may deter people, you could also run it almost dry fuel wise as I doubt anyone would want to take it to a petrol station, also under CCTV. Can you easily take the distributor cap off? I have no idea.

Sounds like you've got most things covered, but:
If you take off the reg - wont the parking attendants think somethings up?
Park with the steering turned fully say left, and leave it in gear, so it cant have the handbrake cut and then rolled out of the space onto a lorry!!
Also, can't you take out an important electrical lead (technical people will know which one) and take it with you - so the car wont start at all ever???
My best advise tho, is to get a taxi / train not drive and then not have to spend the holiday worrying about the wee beasty!! £40 well spent and peace of mind!!!!

I read a similar thread last year.
(It was the one where the guy was leaving his car in the garage whilst away on holiday. Various amusing bits of advice from "hiring a skip to block the garage" to "bricking up the garage door" were offered as well as some serious suggestions. - Anyone remember it?)
I think Moray suggested unplugging and removing the ECU.
As I recall, he said it's under the passenger floor.

(PS Moray - please edit if I've got this wrong.)

I left my Scoob at Gatwick off site parking a few weeks ago with only the standard UK alarm and imobiliser.
Had no problems at all, except that there was an extra 200 miles on the clock, but then you expect that don't you?
(I'm joking)
If it's a "leave your keys" job, then just make sure you take note of the mileage first. My car had 3 miles on it when I returned due to them moving it about.

Depends wot yr fuse box is like under the bonnet . . . . .
But on mine MY98 there was a large Green fuse that I used to remove, it made no difference to the alarm etc, but even when u put the keys in the ignition nothing happened.
There are only 2 of these fuses so its easy to work out which one it is.
I was shown this trick by a guy who worked for Subaru.
Good Luck

I left my Daimler at Heathrow for over 1000 days (yes, 1000 days - I worked overseas for 4 yrs and came back every weekend).
I had no problems, and never heard of any problems. If you can afford it, stick to the larger, better secured car parks like APCOA (sp?)

Hook up one of your HT leads to the steering column. If Joe Scumbbag tries to steal it he will have a hair raising experience.
Your immobiliser and lock are probably enough to deter a drive-away thief. You could pull a couple of the HT leads off, but you might forget which is which when you come back. To deter tow-aways, drive into the space, put the steering to full lock. Put the wheel lock on. A wheel clamp is another good visible deterent, but spend a few quid on a decent lock for it. Ultimately you can't stop a determined thief, but if you need to make it so difficult that he choses something else instead

Make sure you take it in your hand luggage and not in your case - imagine if your luggage got "Lost" and you had no ECU to drive home with.....
Also, the claim limit for lost luggage is usually a couple of hundred quid , hardly enough to cover the ECU....bet a new one is a fortune....

Hi Barge
Don't dismiss the power of the x-ray machine on the ECU without checking. Also, dependent on the type of chip used - if its CMOS then you'll probably buxxer it by handling it improperly. I really don't know what the ECU chip is but its worth checking out before you set-off in to the sunset!
