I have the 550 as well from the group buy and here in Greece I haven't gone past a speed cam yet as there are none in my town at the moment, however from previous posts I have read that if the camera has no film in it or is turned off the radar detector will not pick it up.

PS someones post has not registered. It should have been above mine.

I received my Bell Euro 550 yesterday from the group buy and thought I'd test it in my bro's Focus Zetec becos my car isn't arrving til the 1st! Driving round the town with UK and motorway setting it didn't detect the 3 cameras whose location we knew that we drove past (one time I was about 2 feet away with the window down pointing it at the thing!). Is this unit going to do what I want ? i.e. detect speed cameras consistently or is it more a hit and miss affair....I was under the impression it was a very good detector....? any one else experienced this ? could I be doing something wrong ?

Yeah I've started to suspect its reliability,Its picked up radar guns several times with loads of warning which on one instance certainly saved me But as for cameras I have only ever picked up about 3 (K-Band) but have driven past probably 50+,surely the ratio of phonies is'nt that great ?

p.s. Does anybody know of a camera in the NW that definately works.

Where abouts in the NW are you? I know several cameras along the A580 East Lancs road out of Manchester are live cos I've seen the police changing the film in them regularily on my way to/from work. Oh and my mate has been caught by the one west bound at the Swinton junction opposite Charlie Browns. Hope this helps.

DuggE2,
find a gatso on a straight, safe, under-posted dual carriageway, which will almost certainly provide a positive test. The gantry cameras on the M25 variable speed limit are a good bet.
Ones in built-up areas, or outside schools don't generate enough revenue to warrant fitting live cameras!!!

I made identical enquiries myself just after I got mine.
I know of three I can drive past within 2 miles, and nothing. I was told 'you'll know when it finds one'. Trouble was, I didn't find a single active camera between Milton Keynes and Torquay. Eventually found one in Paignton. God what a racket.
Don't forget that the camera that wasn't active yesterday, might well be today.

i have been from brum to exeter to plymouth and back this week end.Not a squeak on the M5.
got close to derriford hospital in plymouth boy that one was live ok.+ its covered in black and yellow paint how refershing. A police force that truly is not just generating funds.
so it does work but quite a lot of the gatsco's don't seem "armed" or active.any one else anything to add?

It'll just be that the cameras are not active.
You'll be surprised just how few are.
If it is broken there are only 2 ways you can find out:
1) Ask someone else in the area to tell you of one which they know is active, and drive past it
2) Drive past the ones it is not picking up quickly, and if you get tickets then it is broken - This option is not recommended for obvious reasons
You do not have to point the detector at it, just leave it facing out the windscreen, mine even works while sitting on the passenger seat

Err, yes.
A colleague has one fitted. Initially he was concerned that it did not work, as he couldn't find a live GATSO. Eventually he did, and now realises that only about one in ten is "live" in terms of a detector, and even less in terms of a camera.
On my commenting to him on another thread
