I've just been looking at radar detectors in the USA, such as
BEL870 $79.90
BEL880 $139.90
BEL890 $147.90
BEL950 $196.90
BEL970 $217.90
BEL980 $239.90
These seem alot cheeper than over here, I know shipping + tax needs to be added on top,
Will the bands in the usa be the same as over here?

no idea, I have a similar quesiton as the blackbeast has some japanese radar dector thing, but I've never used it, mainly as I gather they use different bands. would rather go for a geodesy to be honest.

You would be wasting your money if you bought one from the US.
They use different bandwidths than the uk cameras/handheld and there is only minor compatability if you want a cheap one there was a thread a few days back selling the bell550 for 320quid all in

Agree with Tony.
I used to run a U.S. detector, and always thought that was the way they were supposed to be.
Until i got my Bel550. Now i get ample warning of Gatsos, less interference from traffic light detectors, and peace of mind
that i'm covering all wavelengths.
In short - DON'T BOTHER WITH A U.S. SPEC RADAR DETECTOR.

Actually, I have used my US spec. radar when I have visited family in the UK. I use a Passport 8500 that will display the actual bandwith of the signal received. You can easily pick up on what frequency the police use. Someone corect me if I'm wrong cause it's been a while since I crossed the pond.
Cheers,
Pete
