Subaru service history is good to get as it means all work necessary should have been completed.
Timing belts, clutches and turbos are the more expensive items that, if fail, will set you back. The life of these varies depending on how the car has been driven and cared for.
Not cast in stone but the 'life' of a turbo is reckoned to be 100,000 miles, clutches 40 - 60,000. Timing (cam) belt has a service schedule change of 45,000 miles.
It may be worth getting an RAC inspection - I never have! but my UK95 had recently had new clutch, cam belt and turbo when I bought as the garage had caused engine damage due to incompetance. I don't know how you would spot a failing clutch but the cam belt and any turbo replacement should be on an invoice. Maybe get someone with a scoob to go with you if you can...
That price seems quite good (to me) - if you have a reserve of money then you could decide that anything that need replacing will be covered. If it is already stretching you then go for one with dealer history for comfort and get an inspection.
Email me if you want any more help.

Personally the mileage would not put me off if I was a low mileage driver, but if £7k is your budget then there are lower mileage cars in your budget, though leather is quite rare. If you can stretch to a little more then you can get a lot more car, say £8.5k for a 97 car, I wish that's what I had done now.

that car is when a subaru was a subaru never had a turbo go on any subaru even those on 150,000 plus shouldn't have piston slap either i wouldn't worry to much if you are happy with it go for it,

Thanks for all the replys,
My head says no as 7k is not my limit i have 11k to spend.
Bought my saph cossie with 92k on it and it has cost me 6k in 3.5 years and 25k miles.
If it had a fssh i would be temted.
Big prob is my cossie i have now is 317bhp and 354lb torque and i know i will never get that out of a uk car but i cant get finance on an import.so if i start messing with a 105k miler big bills are looming.
Still i dont know of another estate that will go as hard. Was thinking of a T5R volvo but my misses hated it.
I am p*ss*d off with it know i just want a new scooby to play with.
Cheers

Rev it to 800rmp and listen for a knock, this is bad news apparantly.
My Scooby has the same miles, full history from Subaru untill 100k then I took it out of the network and got Powerstation to do the service.
My clutch was on the way out at 85k and that was the second or third one.
Discs wer out at 103k so I put uprated Tar OX on for £100 well worth it.
The valve springs brok at 85k but were fixed under warrenty as I had only had it a few months (Thanks TH White or Cirencester you are nice guys!)
No rust, paints OK but stone chips a plenty, interior is fine.
I would go for a car with history even if its just a load of receipts. Servicing is not that cheap so people may skimp. Everything else is fine (so far!)
Good luck

I wouldn't worry about losing the 354lbs torque - it's a cossie!!
Mine is now upto 120000 - original turbo and it's been running higher boost than standard for the last 18months with no probs.

If you say that 1k is for insurance and £10k for the car, you should find a very nice 97 car for around £10k with lots of extras if you want, estates are often cheaper than saloons. 97 is the year of the facelift and 98 the year of the newer dashboard, both these years suffered from 'piston slap' which was fixed under warranty mostly (see drivetrain section for more info) but otherwise should be a good buy
