All

Coming home down my favourite bumpy B road I come up behind a P1. We then have 10 minutes of "fun" ....max revs mostly ... until Mr P1 puts his hazards on & waves me to pull over.
Oooops I think - here we go - he is going to give me abuse (or have a go cos he couldn't pull away from me !)
He gets out & says the car has just "died" on him....it wont re-start & smells like its just fried its innards.....
Felt sorry for the bloke as he had only had it 2 months.
Asked if he knew the SIDC etc & he didn't - but said when he stopped crying he would join & take a look at the BBS.
At least he can just take it to a Subaru Garage & get it sorted.

Ro.

Ro,

This incident may be of interest to us for the main bearing thread in drivetrain. Hopefully he will join and let us know what failed in his engine.

You mention high revs. was this in 4th and 5th gears?

I drive past his house everyday so will stop & ask him the verdict soon.
It was sustained high revs over a period of only about 10 minutes or so - 2nd / 3rd & 4th gears right up to red-line.
Maybe its a one-off...or maybe a failing of the re-mapped ecu has been discovered.
He runs it on NUL FYI.

Ro.

Cool

I had a similar problem with my first P1 on a w reg.I was having a bit of fun with a bike for about 10 miles then bang the infamous no`4 piston went and put the con-rod through the engine casing.
I would not accept a new engine on a car like that so they did me a deal to change to a brand-new one as my first was a demo.
Cost to change was 2 grand which was not bad as my old one had 17,000 miles.
hope this helps

So that's 2/1000 with a failed engine. Not significant yet, but any further failures known?

Unhappy

Are Impreza engines really this weak??

The reason I ask is that my friend gave me a lift in his Escort RS Turbo and that has covered 138,000 miles without going bang. It has also been totally thrashed and is still going strong.

So is a 1.6 CVH (i.e old and rough) stronger than an Impreza engine??

RS Turbo Engines = STONG?? I dont think so!!

I had 3 Engines in mine, 2 were brand new jobbies from FORD's!! And all 3 went bang, the impreza's I've had have never given any trouble!! Although a calibra turbo I had put up a good fight before blowing!

Well, my 1.6 CVH Cabriolet runs better at 99,000miles than my Impreza engine at 15,000miles read into that what you will - the Impreza hesitates judders rattles and squeaks - the Escort doesnt!! Simple

Speaking to a lot of motorsport experts, they all agree there is no need to go near the redline on an impreza. The peak torque is at around 4000 rpm and up at 6000 + the boost drops significantly, and you lose power.

Still doesn't forgive a weak engine though...

Dave, so that's 4 failed in less than a year? That may soon look statistically significant. Hmm...

All,

Could also mean that everyone with a P1 is more prone to thrash it than most others. Reason for buying a P1, is they weren't happy with the standard turbo ?

I have a MY00, that I've had for around 5 months, and till recently I've gone all the way to the rev limiter.

I've only recently, after reading a few threads started changing gear at around 5.5k to 6k. I very concerned about the engine being weak and letting go.

Cool

This is why I have a UK car, always with full UK warranty.

Also, I would suggest that this is not a normal thing. At 17k miles my P1 did well over an hour off the clock down the A16 across the the pond is bit hot & noisy - but no damage done...

his car had done 2000 miles. Think the run-in is 1000 miles.

Thanks
