I'm off up north this weekend, leaving Swindon on A419 then A417 up the M5 to M6 then M6 to J30ish (Preston). Anything to watch out for (I hear there are some digital speed cameras on the M6 now)? I want to make good progress so the journey doesn't take too long. Never seem to have too many problems on the M5, but the M6 always worries me, are there a lot of speedchecks/traffic police on there at the moment?
Return Journey will be the same but to Bristol on the M5.
Thanks
Jon

As you said there are SPECS cameras on the M6 . They are in the roadworks between jct18 & jct 19 - 4 in each direction. They are easy to spot though but do slow traffic down immensely as not many people know what they are and just jump on the brakes. Some of the other roadworks you encounter mey have Gatsos too.
Didn't see many police cars (marked or unmarked) on the M6 on either Friday afternoon/evening or Sunday night though.
Traffic all depends on wht time you get near Birmingham!!

Not too bothered about birmingham last time I did this journey (5 months ago) I found a sensible-ish way through that took about 30mins - previously it has been known to take 2+hours on the motorway! I did (fictionally of course) Bristol to Manchester in 2hours last time (when birmingham was clear), which is good progress. What gets me most is the traffic folw on the M6 is often horrible and I tend to floor the gas when I get the chance, so I need not to have a laser pointed at me at the time!
Thanks

Jon,
I do this route fairly regularly, I fact tomorrow and Friday in fact.
Watch for an unmarked blue T5 on the M5 - Saw some poor sod getting nicked by it on Tuesday.
There is the occasional laser camera on the bridge in a tranny van now and again - Just keep your eyes peeled.
The Digi cameras near jctn 19 - Be carefull as you leave the roadworks as 2+1 lanes come back to 3 but it's about half a mile before the derestricted sign and there is a camera in between. Be careful.
Cheers
Steve.
