Evo reckon the P1 is 2nd only to the RB5.

You haven't read it properly, they reckon the RB5 is second only to the P1.

EVO said the RB5 WRSport was the best impreza yet.
They said the P1 was the ultimate but a little 'extreme' to live with every day.
I have a RB5 WRSport and am not being biased.
I would love to have a P1....but insurance, cost etc tips the scales away from the P1.
From what I've heard from people who have driven both (and mentioned in EVO), there is not a great deal between them and on a bumpy A2B road the P1 may seem trickier to handle due to the harsher suspension.

Which issue was this?
They said the 22b was too harsh but in the tests I read they said the P1 was even better than the RB5. No mention of it being too 'extreme'.

I agree with BT52b - I read that the P1 was 'the one to have' and the RB5 was second to it...... which issue did you read the opposite ??? Strange eh !
I'm not biased, even though I own a P1

I thought this was defined at the end of the EvoVII vs MY01STi (version ??)????
Rated P1 ahead of RB5 (and they've only ever tested the WR-version RB5), followed by STiV etc etc.

I love it how mags and newspapers get it so wrong. You check 99% of magazines and the RB5 is listed as havind 240+bhp. Now I have seen that the UK300 has 245 bhp as standard . What going on, why cant they get these things right. All they do is upset the new owner who doesnt understand that they have to pay an extra £1600-2000 to get the quoted power from a so called standard version. I wonder how many people waiting for a standard UK300 or buying a second hand standard RB5 realize they only have 215 (ish) bhp. This is not Subaru but the way these cars are listed in the press.
The worst thing buying second hand is that if its not a Subaru dealer they the salesman flashes a mag at the customer and says "Oh yeah, look they all have 240 bhp".
Not good and not clever .
cheers

Pretty sure I remember the coty article saying that "the RB5 was amazing on one stretch on road last year but unbelieveably the P1 is even better...." or words something like that (JB I think).
They also said pretty much the same in the first review of the P1 when it came out.
Reckon the buyers guide writer must have got confused with the 22b or he was talking about costs of ownership.
Not that I would go blindly what they say, since I disagree strongly with them over the new WRX and the Exige.

I have an RB5 WR Sport and was curious about the P1 so test drove one.
P1 owners may think I am biased, but in my honest opinion the P1 was a dissapointment in all depts except for more comfortable ride, due to improved damping.
Decision to stick with the RB5 was a no-brainer!! (no smart **** wise cracks please children).

EVO May 2001 issue page 62 third paragraph with reference to the STi7....
"It's no P1, though. In the hierarchy of fast Imprezas, in terms of the wholeness of its ability, it ranks third with the last generation STi VI, behind the limited edition 237bhp RB5 and the P1."
EVO Jan 2001 issue page 53 eCOTY
"The P1 is the worlds best affordable performance car."
page 84
"And the P1 will be the most sought-after of the lot. This will go down as the classic old-shape Impreza just ahead of the RB5"
"I had thought there wasn't really anywhere further to go from last years RB5, but Prodrive have done it again. Barring the 911, there is nothing that will beat it cross country."
EVO February 2001 issue (the one with the Jag XKR on the front) Impreza buying guide.
page 115 last paragraph
"Finally theres the brilliant P1, in our view the ultimate old shape Impreza..."

dba, I can expand on that. How about:
An RB5 is a load of crap compared to a UK99/00 with PPP?
Well, okay, not exactly but according the the SIDC FAQ, an RB5 is no more than a UK99 with fancy cosmetics and a PPP engine kit.
In which case, it's not quite up to my UK00 with PPP, Prodrive suspension and APR brakes, but costs more.
Richard.

Have read many articles on all the above. Have you all forgotten that the STi was rated as good as the P1 if not even better apart from suspension being a bit stiff. Being that most people change backbox then brakes then springs i know which car i'd buy...
and yes i've got an RB5wrs but i'd buy an STi any-day-of-the-week!!
