How mch damage may he have caused...

My brother has a STi 5.
He's llived in Cyprus for 4 years and has been back in the UK now for about 3 months. In Cyprus fuel is about 10quid a tankfull. Since he's been in the UK feeling so aggrieved at paying the same for 2 gallons as he would for a full load so he's run it on UL, and not SUL/Optimax as he did in Cyprus.
Will he have caused any long term damage, if so what and is there any way of checking if it's bad or not.
I only found when he said it was running like a bag of nails and struggled to get past 120 (on a circuit of course). I told him to go and put Optimax in and stop being so cheap, he did'nt like paying 5p a litre more at fill ups.
Did'nt consider how much a rebuild might be if things went totally **** up... I did advise him that he would lose some power through poorer quality of fuel and that the engine was designed to run on jap 98%octane fuel and uk UL is only 95%
Just was'nt sure if or what damage it may cause... Any help would be apprieciated.

P.S. Is there any ecu mods etc you can have to run on normal UL..

Imports are supposed to run on 100RON petrol as that is what they get over in Japan.
The closest you can get is either SUL or Optimax plus an octane booster.
I would heavily advise him to start using the SUL option than risk his engine on 95RON UL
