Sure this has been discussed many a time, but I would like to know the real reason why people drive round in Sooped uo Novas that are no more than a Sinclair C5 dressed up. Do they think that it looks good?
I dont want to offend anyone but does anyone have a real answer??

Cheers

Jas

I dont mean to offend anyone here as I am sure some of you wear baseball caps, but, I have a general rule that if I see a driver wearing headgear, flat cap, baseball cap, womans flowery example etc, I take extra care.

Experience has taught me to beware, I suppose if the wearer is also driving a 'hotted up' Nova I might take even more care.

The Nova is the Mk1 or Mk2 Escort of the 90's. When I was 17/18 (10 years ago) there were loads of these around just like the Nova's today. Who knows what the young boy racer car will be in 10 years time???

What a Stupid question really

They drive nova's becuase..... (i have had two previously)

1. relatively cheap insurance - Insurance is the biggest rip off going my brother (17) is leanring to drive and needed a car to learn in a drive when he passes (god help us all) he has a 1.2 nova merit which he intends to put some stereo in and thats it... insurance quotes all over £1k!!! and thats 3rd party only

2. there good fun - lower one with a decent suspension kit and it'll suprise a lot of people (gotta make up for the power some where )

3. There cheap to run - says it all

4. there cheap to maintain - and easy to work on too!

5. There cheap to buy - notice the whole cheap thing going on here....

6. There nippy!

7. they look good - compared to some of the other 'hot hatches' out there!

8. there's lots of head room for obscure hats!! hehehe

Flame me if you like, but there all good reasons, i used to like mine and it suited me fine for what I needed it for!

Cheers
Dave

Andy
I don't think you are right. See ScoobydoobyDave's first point - insurance!
Young Boy Racers will not be able to insure even a 10/15 year old Scoob.
But they will find something else to play with - 206 anybody?

Lets hope they will never get their hands on a scoob.

Do they really honestly think women are turned on by their 'motors'?
Why dont they save and buy a decent car instead of modding it up.

As I'm sure GP will mention if this topic continues, 'beware the sooped up Nova'...

Some of them are not quite what you think...

I speak from (a more than embarassing) experience.

Ahh... it was the deathbassboxray that got me...

The worst has to be the type with the Scooby scoop on it, even seen some Astras with these. I suppose they are trying to make you believe it's some kind of air feed to throttle bodies or some equally far fetched device...

Come on, did you never fix a bit of card to your bicycle forks to make a noise on the spokes, or was it just me that did that, or something similar.
The scoop etc is just a 'slightly' more grown up version of that. If it makes them happy then good, who is it hurting.
I would just rather they didn't drive around town like idiots, but then if they went out of town no-one would see their modded cars. Lets face it our Scoobs are just more grown up toys, or is it just me again - I'll get my coat!

Some Nova lad with a scooby scoop on his bonnet started talking to me the other month when he saw my scoob in the pub car park. He had a 2 litre conversion in it pushing 200 bhp! Saw the same guy last week and guess what he's bought? Yes, thats right, a scooby!

Quite worrying but there are cheap enough scoobs now (only paid 7K last summer for mine), so expect a few more Nova boys being converted.

jjk - I am 31, with a good job, mortgage, and supporting the missus through higher education, but I do like wearing caps and modding my scoob so am I a puffa jacket wearing boy racer as well

When I was young I had a Fiat Uno... and the sense to know that it was never going to handle or perform well, so I left it bog standard, and waited until I could afford something better.

That's my 2p's worth!

I do agree a little with some of the comments posted here, but after being at Bentley and seeing a load of crusty old porsche owners accuse us of being the max power brigade and how we should return to essex it kinda saddens me that were no different, merely passing on the same message to another generation.

Just goes to show were no different than those that were belittling us at Bentley with comments like these.

Personally a know a few modded nova drivers and they really appreciate and like my car, the only reason they cant have anything close is the £1500 it costs them just to insure a nova.

If you were 17 again now would you rather be seen in a battered old fiat panda, i wouldnt.
Fair play to them and lets not get to stuck up.

Fair comment PT,

Only thing that winds me up is when they attatch themselves to your bumper, but again, its the driver not the car.

Had a "rude boy" in a Nova behind me the other day, kept well back, and gave me a wave as he turned off. A genuine car enthusiast but a rare one...

You and your fancy Fiat Unos, I had 3 Nissan Bluebirds on the trot when I were a lad. But they were big, comfortable barges and the insurance was very reasonable for a young turk.

Actually, most of the "Nova boys" I've spoken to regard the Impreza Turbo as the car equivalvent of Mecca. And they give us a lot of respect. Which is nice.

Right guys, I drive a 1.3. SR nova for work, WHY cos it keeps the miles down on my Scoob, Plus some half wit would damage my Scoob in the works car park (cos it gets right up their noses that you have one and they don't,) Also I could'nt afford to run my Scoob everyday to and from work, plus I would'nt want too cos the milage soon mounts up, Plus My son works in a body shop and bought the Nova for a £100 the Guvnor was away on holiday so whist away the boys played, i.e. Toatl respray and some new panels (all booked down to the company by the way) Then he got me a set of allys for it result one good looking nova for £220 need I say anymore.
Cheers

Some fair points well made.

It does bother me, though, to see so many cars running about with bonnet scoops etc that look like they came off an Impreza.

Okay, before you flame me, I know that the bonnet scoop was not a Subaru invention and that they are freely available
for purchase at various retail outlets and that many people put them on their cars for more than just cosmetic purposes.

However, if you were going to steal one, what would be the most likely source?

It still pi$$es me off to think that someone, somewhere is driving around with a spoiler on their car that belongs to me

I'll get my flame suit...

When I turned 17, all my friends had novas, and I was like no chance!! So I went for a nippy 1litre, caleld A Diahatsu Charade GTti (1litre turbo) pocket rocket! Was very quick for a first car, used to eat alive 1.9 gtis! VROOOMM! Did the full wrx to it 15" alloys/low profile tires, lowered uprated suspension, exhaust, boom boom stereo, and then finally a bbr chip, and uprated drilled/grooved discs - and then well, I saw the car I have now, advertised on the internet in japan (was a private sale) and the rest is now history! Lost a lot of money suping up the gtti and then selling it, still haven't learnt my lesson, as I just done some major mods on my car (though I did have it 2years before I started doing this - coming up to 21 now!)

I just wonder why they dont save their money and buy a decent car.
Also the ones I have seen seem to thrash their motors through town centres which is not the safest of things to do.
Alos alot of tail gating which is v annoying.

Blimey JJK you do live in your own little world don't you.
'Save their money to buy a better car' - yes, then run it, insure it, etc.

I had a '70 Mk3 Cortina GT (12 years old) as my first car and proud of it, i could not afford to buy anything 'better'

At 17/18/19 i would have loved a 'better' car although i had to live as well on my meager salary.

If you have always been in a position of having nice motors then good for you! no wonder Scoob ownners get a bad rep on other boards as thinking themselves 'Godlike' and having the 'best cars'

This must be a wind-up or a very sad individual. Perhaps if i had a Lambo or Ferrari then i would look down at 'less fortunate' Scoob, Evo, Cossie, cheap(ish) performance cars and think - Poor devils, why dont't they save up and buy a 360

Don't ever change, i love you just the way you are!

I'll get my coat...

Sorry if I am giving scooby owners a 'snobby' name. That would be the last thing I want to do.

jjk, why does it bother you so? Obviously they think it looks good. I find it hard to believe they are being ironic.....

We may not like it but what they hell, leave em to it. I can think of a lot worse ways of spending time and money than modding a car. In addition to all this, it is obviously a form of self-expression. Cars are like clothes, they say something about you, about what it is that you are into and like to do with your life .

I am curious now. What is it that you dislike so much that you had to start a thread about it? Or are you genuinely just confused that anyone woul do that to a Nova?

Mike
