Steam cleaning your engine! Good or bad?
#1
Whats the general consensus on steam cleaning your engine? I have heard some people say its the norm and others say "don't want to do that"
It's just the engine is so dirty as the previous owner lived in London its clogged up with crap.
cheers

I'd not think about it after living with electrical problems in a renault 19 16v caused by someone steam cleaning the engine...
They're supposed to be a bit dirty. Live with it
Nick.

HI
IMHO I would'nt go anywhere near the engine bay with a steam cleaner as there are way to may electrical bits & bobs under the bonnet.
All I do is spray everywhere with GT85 leave it for a few days spray again and then wipe off with some rag. Repeat if needed.

I understood that the engine has a waxxy kind of film on it, and when you steam clean it, you wash it off, and then all the alloy bits start to corrode. I wouldn't go near it if I were you!
I'd rather have it a bit dirty, than all scabby!

Mark Underwood aka Wizard of Wax did mine and I was crapping it as it looked aggressive but the finished article was like new
I would only let a pro such as Mark do it as there could be some danger points!

Thanks for all your advice,
I have since talked to Mark Underwood and ordered some stuff that will do the job. Apparently the stuff he supplies will replace the protective coat. He said that as long as you avoid the alarm and intercooler it is just a case of spraying the whole lot with this stuff and jet washing it off at 500 psi. I must admit though it still looks a bit scary as there is some exposed wire bits. I think i will take him up on his offer of calling him any time for advice one more time before doing it. He's quite a sound bloke really. I plan to do it this weekend so i'll post exactly what i did and the results whatever they may be...
