I believe the Laser Gun has to be calibrated before every shift, and your vehicle has to be tracked for at least 3 seconds before obtaining the speed reading. That I know I read somewhere, but I can’t remember where.

MRK, I think that is Radar. Laser is 'instant on.' As soon as they point it at you they get an accurate speed. Everything else needs calibrated (radar, car speedo's etc) every day, but I'm not sure about laser

A colleage was stopped doing 42 in a 30 zone yesterday. The laser had last been recalibrated on the 11th may 2001.

Does anyone know how often recalibration should occur - I thought that 20 days was a bit much?

Check out the speedtrap site posted by MRK and scroll through the ACPO guide.
This gives the Police operational requirements for all of their speed trap equipment.

Lasers should be calibrated every time they are used. They are calibrated against a stationary object (like a signpost) The 3 seconds thing does indeed relate to radar devices.

Not sure if its on the UK speedtraps site but there was tell of a story where during a court case, the Policeman showed the defending lawyer how the laser gun worked and how reliable/accurate they are by pointing it at the back wall of the court....... It registered 7mph.

Case thrown out!
