Took my my99 STi RA for a hard run last night and I noticed a couple of things that someone may be able to help me with:
I know I have the short box it it, but how do other people find long stints at high spped in these cars? I have some degree of mechanical sympathy and found a 10 mile blast up and down the box great fun but I also felt a bit guilty with the high revs. Do they stand this kind of abuse well?
It's got 4 pots on the front but the brakes feel a bit woolly. I amgoing to change the fluidanyway but should an STi be like that on standard pads?
I thought the doors were about to blow open at about 120mph - i kept it going till 135 but then thought better of it ! Is this normal?
What a cracking car though - great fun.

Brake feel improves with braided hoses. Well worth doing it by all accounts, especially if you are changing the fluid anyway - should firm up the brake pedal - will be doing mine in the next week or so when I put on my new 4 pots.

Also, a big brake conversion would improve stopping, naturally enough. Am thinking of doing this when I have worn my current discs out.

Can't say about any of the other items, as I don't drive that fast (well, not often...) As you say, the cars are cracking!

Godspeed do a nice big brake conversion and its not too expensive either if not then as said, go for braided hoses and put some DOT 5.1 brake fluid in there (and some nice pads like mintex 1144/1155's)

KenB,

Things i've found after driving my WRX on manx roads:-

1) Stiff suspension it toooo much. (except on the TT course)
2) Standard Subaru 4 pots / discs are not good enough.
3) Ugraded 296mm Discs and pads are still not good enough, i've warped my second set driving from Ramsay to Onchan on the mountain road.

Apart from these few niggles, The car is made for this kind of territory.

Best advice would be to upgrade your brakes to 330mm's somehow, either Godspeed / SS/brembo/Kad or AP 6 pots.

Cheers guys.
Thanks for the good information. At least I know what to spend to best effect now.
You know how it is, new car (to me!)... is it ok?? is it me??

STi Man, do your side windows seem to move away from the rubber seals (causing much cabin noise) when running up the mountain? I found it a bit off putting, but it's ok if it's supposed to do that.

KenB,

No not really, but bear in mind that I have a MY01 WRX not a STI V. but I guess your door seals may be a bit tired? PLUS you were doing 120 - 135(Legally ) over a windy mountain! Just turn the stereo up

How much does replacement door seals cost for these cars? Anyone?

Whats the RA's mph/1000rpm.

From memory the UK Scoob was about 24.5mph/1000rpm, the Alfa I have now is 20.8mph/1000rpm and does feel a little unrelaxed at 90mph+, suppose its the to make the most of the Variable Valve Timing and Variable intake geometry.

The Honda S2000 has a six speed box and sixth is geared at less than 19mph/1000rpm, again to make use of the VVT. Just doesn't seem right cruising at 5000rpm.

Thanks STi Man. Nice to know the new one is better but as for the stereo, why listen to music when I have that beautiful noise under the bonnet!
My RA is geared for about 20mph/1000rpm, indicated of course.
I get the distinct feeling in my 99, that it isn't really built to be nailed at constant high speeds (short box, not really a difficult assumption!), it feels more at home charging up and down them rather than top speed. I guess the R1 wins there then !
Just holding at high rpm for a while in top, I wondered how unburseable these engines are. I have no worries about nailing the bike 'cos it's almost unburstable (famous last words eh?), but does a scoooby handle the same abuse?

KenB,

I've driven the STi 7, now that's a better car again compared to the WRX01, should be much better on the Manx roads. Can't wait......Part of the reason the WRX is being part-ex'd for one is that I get a free brake upgrade!
