Idle Control Valve - Classic
Just made a trip up to reading, first short run from Uxbridge after a year. Passed MOT with flying colours the day before. About to get off and the cars check engine comes on. Diagnosed it by my good friend FB tuning Richard. Idle control valve gone. Thought I’d clean it so took it out loads of carbon on it but no luck. Ordered a new one. Car drives but idles horrible and consistent reving up and down between 1k 2k revs. Anyone had similar problem? Looks like the OEM control valve and never been changed. waiting patiently to fit it.

I've had this issue. I tried a non OEM replacement from ICP - about £20 IIRC and although it didn't stall, it had a very high idle speed. I didn't try to reset the ECU to see if it needed to settle down. I tried several second hand IACV's, with no luck (all cleaned and prepped), until I found one s/h unit that worked. One tip I read from Bob Rawl, was to gently pull the stopper out as far as it will go before fitting as he believes it help the ecu calibrate it. I haven't tried that and don't pull it out completely.

Interesting, i picked up a ICP one, and installed it, it worked with no issues at all. When i first put it in, i have to admit, it was revising silly high and flagged the engine light again, but then after it had warmed up it was okay. i also cleaned the internals with brake cleaner as the carbon that had built up was probably there from new. But no issues now. Car drives great and surprisingly idles way better than before.

The engine light switched off after it had warmed up ??
Iv been through several new icv on another car , revved stupid , no matter how warm anything was
maybe after switched ignition on / off 30 x , half an hour running the ecu would have learnt something but I doubt
i think mines just dodgy loom

yes, correct, the engine light turned off after the car was warmed up. even on cold starts, its still off, so i believe it has sent the right signal to the ECU. did you try to disconnect the battery for 10 mins so the ECU resets itself?

I tried the battery disconnect before now ,didt do anthing
recently have let it run 20 mins, and eventually it got back down to normal idle ...
but next cold start same story

That is strange. could it be a sticky throttle body? Have you cleaned the inside of the inlet properly with break cleaner, It needs to be super clean. But i cant think of what else it can be. If you are still having trouble i would suggest contacting richard at FB tuning.

This is not on a scooby btw
its xsara , multiplexed and quite possibly just dodgy wiring / ecu .
iv been round and round and round and round trying to isolate issues
( French )
including 4 different icv's
