Default EML - 02 sensor 2005 STI

Hi all - apologies if this has been done to death.

My EML light came on during a motorway run a few months back. Car felt no different. Light went off after a restart and didn’t see it again until a few days ago when the yellow EML came back on. It’s gone off again today.

A friend plugged his code reader in and it’s flagged an O2 sensor fault.

Ive booked it in for end of the month to get sorted but my question is can I still drive it without worrying about bolloxing up the engine? EMLs give me the heeby-jeebies.

It’s a completely standard 2005 STI
on 40k miles.

thanks in advance.

if it’s post down pipe cat one i would not care so much , if it’s the pre cat/turbo up pipe more of a concern , mine was on its way out an intermittent fault had no issues as it was working most of the time , mine was pre up pipe , either ones are easy to change just need the correct 02 socket to take it out, a 10 min job , don’t buy cheap sensors though , import car parts or the like

Thanks for replying. Stupid question but how do I know if it’s pre or post up pipe? It’s a 2005 STI. Cheers

I was hoping code reader told you , but as it has not see if some one can code read for you , i found an online site that you just needed a cable for the obd port and it read all the 02 sensor voltages , sorry i can not be much more help with yours , is it worth buying a used one for a few £ and trying that ? or just go expensive any buy a new one , option 3 borrow one and see if problem gets solved , the pre cat is important one the post just seems to measure how the cats working , either if the sensors are fairly easy to get too and get off with the right tool

looking at the cost of 02 sensors on ebay , some as low as 12£ i would buy the front one swap it out and see how it goes , in the long term i would always advise a more expensive original sensor as you get what you pay for but as a way of testing it should work
